Re: Viewing work prints

2010-04-15 by piezobw

I'm old school, so I use 5000k dimming viewing booth to the brightness of the display set adjacent to a 5000k calibrated Eizo or Artisan in a dim room. I calibrate Gamma 1.8 for StudioPrint and Gamma 2.2 for QTR K7 curves. But this is just when I am using the print to evaluate what I am doing in Photoshop to make adjustments.

To really evaluate the print, I live with it in different conditions. I have one wall that is lit with Par 38 that can be dimmed so I can see what they might look like in a gallery (if I get so lucky). Otherwise - and don't laugh out loud - I look on my kitchen dining table when I get the heck out of the studio - being away from the studio helps me evaluate things differently. I actually will walk with it, sit with it.

The studio is all 5000k which helps color evaluation but makes looking at art a less than fulfilling experience. I find looking at prints under "home" conditions very satisfying and quickly find what I don't like easier than when viewing under the clean light of the studio.

But when I am back in Photoshop, it's back to the old school. I do like a display that imitates the proof when adjusting - just not evaluating aesthetics. Hope that makes sense in the two distinctions...
