DW-8000 Patches

DW-8000 Patches

2012-04-07 by PC

I'm sure that many of you are very familiar with Pallium's patchset downloads for the DW-8000...

http://www.pallium.com/bryan/dwpatches.php

If not, check it out and enjoy some of the unique sounds this instrument can make.

There is a patchblock there named "Preload Side B" which is especially good. The patchblock of "Yes" sounds were pretty useful also.

I'm on my 3rd DW-8000 in so many years... I'm not sure I'll keep it because those clackity keys always bugged me too much... Has anyone tried to dampen the keyboard action? Is there a Yamaha replacement keyboard that will work?

Re: [DW8000] DW-8000 Patches

2012-04-08 by Jerome St-Pierre

After I installed the Musitronics turbo pack and wiped out all of my patches by mistake, I loaded 8 of these banks in the secured banks of the turbo pack. I was very excited about these sounds until I realized the turbo "secured banks" weren't kept in memory after turning off the unit.

It seems like there is a problem with the expansion that I received and I never got to fix it (even after changing the turbo battery) but I ended up sorting my 64 favorites sounds out of these Pallium's banks. I've had so much fun with these sounds that I haven't been creating new patches since then. I was always impressed by the DW-8000 sound but I am still totally amazed with this set of patches I sorted.

I still have a backup in .wav format so let me know if anyone would like a copy. They are sorted this way:
  1. Brass
  2. Strings
  3. Synths
  4. Pianos
  5. Voices
  6. Organs
  7. Basses
  8. FX
Cheers!

Cool... yeah shoot me the WAV via email... i had considered going through all of them and doing the same thing.

After programming String sounds on a number of other more modern synths, I was heartened to find *many* lush string sounds in those sets.

This keyboard is also astonishingly good at B3-like sounds. I'm surprised there weren't more trippy sounds in those sets using that digital delay. I have the Poly-800 II and half of my sounds are using/abusing the delay in there. -pc

Oh and I was hoping to find a workable electric piano sound... either a suitcase rhodes or wurlitzer sound. just a little warm and fuzzy, and not the clinkly clean rhodes/dx7-ish sound... I just made an awesome Rhodes for the Waldorf Blofeld and just do one the DW if I don't find what I'm looking for. I didn't find anything on those pallium downloads, though there were several that did a reasonable job of approximating real pianos... -pc

Hi Jerome

I'd very much like to have a listen to these patches... and those on the Pallium site.

Would the patches work in the EX-8000? I can't see why not, unless you know different?

Cheers

Re: DW-8000 Patches

Jerome:

After a year in storage, I too pulled out my unit and immediately replaced the batteries to both the keyboard and the turbo pack. Like you, I loaded the patches I saved in my library only to discover the turbo didn't hold all of the patches except the main 64.

Thinking that some of the patches might be corrupt, I tried reloading the main patch to each memory location and realized that the other locations still didn't hold the memory. My only advantage is that the turbo DID WORK at one time. I tried removing and re-installing the board...no success. I'm wondering if it's a memory chip (or 2) that has gone bad. If you get yours working, spread the word on what went wrong... I'll do the same.

P.S. - Paul (below) asked if anyone has ever reconditioned the keyboard to get rid of the clacking. Yes...I did that several years ago and if I recall, I simply replaced the upper felt strip. If I recall, you can't do the lower strip because of the rubber contact strip but the clacking is caused by the keys returning to the upper position anyway. So the new felt dampens that. BWT, I bought the felt at my local Home Center (HD) and it was the heavier maroon colored felt that works best... totally restored the action!

Hope this helps...

Ah great idea! I've seen someone do this (unneseccarily) to a Waldorf XTk. -pc

Hi Bob,

I was very glad to hear about your experience with the turbo pack secure banks. You confirmed what I first thought: this feature might not work anymore on Musitronics boards. If you look on the website description of the turbo board features, it doesn't even mention these secure banks that should be a major feature.

When I ordered the turbo, I was not even aware of these so called secure banks. I only discovered them when ready the documentation that originates from Angel City, and not Musitronics.

When I asked the engineered at Musitronics he suggested me to test the voltage of the the battery that I received on the board. I had no tool to do this test so I just changed the battery for a new one. After telling him it didn't work he never replied to me so I am still skeptical about this feature from the board that we received.

We've heard of other users out there who have this board installed. It would be nice if you could tell us if the 8 secure banks are working for you. And if so, do you know when the board was installed? Did you get it from Angel City or Musitronics?

May be we could also ask the engineer at Musitronics again...

Anyhow, even without this feature, I do not regret buying it. For 80 euros I think it was well worth the money. But dammit, it still bothers me to think I could have an extra 8 banks if it worked...

Cheers,
