I have Midiquest & Soundquest but haven't given them a whirl since I
helped the company that was making it beta test the first OS X version.
Frankly, my secret weapon for 10-20 year old midi gear is to use 10-20
year old computers for working with them. Think about it, the heydey of
products like the DW-8000 saw the first really powerful computers for
their time, and applications like Galaxy and the first Midi Timepiece
interfaces from MOTU. I keep a PowerMac 8500 around (with a 500MHz G3
upgrade) that I use with an older MOTU Midi Timepiece A/V -the model
with the Macintosh printer/modem serial port to connect to the computer.
You can pick up these interfaces, and the older Midi Timepiece and
Midi Timepiece II for $10 to $20 all day long on eBay, while the current
USB Midi Timepiece A/V still carries a $595 pricetag. Grab a PowerMac
8500 for free and you have a really great interactive MIDI patchbay.
On top of that I got the older MidiQuest for Classic Mac OS. I see that
they still sell Midiquest 9 and it says it can run on either OS X or
MacOS 9.2. While a PowerMac 8500 won't run 9.2, a beige G3 up through
an 800 MHz G4 imac will, and those are pretty dirt-cheap and readily
available on Craigslist as well. Also any of the G4 Titanium PowerBooks
will boot and run MacOS 9.x very well, so there's a lot of readily
available and not terribly expensive computer solutions for older MIDI gear.
I found the old Galaxy Plus Editors to work well when it wasn't
crashing, but it was very crash-prone, and OpCode is gone, so there's no
support. The old Midi Timepieces work very well on a PowerMac, and
software for them is readily and freely downloadable from MOTU.
*MANUALS* for how to run that software are what is really missing, and
the best documentation for using the software for the MOTU Midi
Timepieces is actually a chapter in the manual for Digital Performer
4.5, which there is no PDF for that I am aware. I wouldn't mind
scanning the section for the Timepiece software and posting that, if
MOTU will not object. That's a project I can look into.
Midiquest looks like the best modern solution to me, and I'll have to
dust off my gear to give it a spin. I'd love to do a review and post it
on DW8000.com, or host any independent review if anyone else takes the
plunge.
