DW out of tune

DW out of tune

2008-11-19 by Michael Holcer

greetings,

I've posted about this here a couple years ago but had no response so i'll try again.

I was given an DW-8000 a long time ago and it's perfect condition but the tuning is a few keys off - mening every C is G etc.
Has anyone heard of this problem and who can fix it ?

thanx

This may be an obvious question, but have you noticed the tuning slider
on the left side of the keyboard?

I have a DW8000, but don't play it much as I'm more of a vintage collector of synths instead of a player/programmer.  So I'm not too familiar with all of its features.  But I can, however, suggest that if the keyboard is in tune with itself (meaning you can play the chromatic scale and play songs and everything's in tune), but it's out of tune to A=440, then the only thing I can suggest is maybe the transposing on it may be programmed to transpose it up to the key it's in (C = G as you say).  I honestly don't know, but figure I can at least suggest working with the transpose feature on it.  Hope that helps.

There is no transpose parameter (save for OSC 2's) programmed in the
DW8000.

This seems most likely a hardware issue. still..

The "Write" button doubles as it's midi reset (panic button). If that
doesn't fix it, blast it with a few panic resets from your DAW. After
that, clear it's memory, reload it's factory patches afresh. After
that, it's time to take it in for repair. Assuming you're in the
States, Midwest Audio in Arlington Heights IL is highly respected.
Should it require service you may as well have them replace it's
battery. Key clatter on mine is extremely loud, how about yours? Good
luck. Leonard

Check your patch settings on parameters 13, 23, and 24.
Parameter 13 is the output level of Oscillator 1. It might be turned
down so low as to make Osc 1 inaudible compared to Osc 2.
Parameter 23 is the output level of Oscillator 2. It might be turned up
high relative to Osc. 1.
Finally, parameter 24 is the tuning setting of Osc 2. It can be set to
one of five values, that set its interval relative to Osc 1:
1 = Unison (should be in tune)
-3 = Minor third higher than Osc 1 (Every C will sound as E-flat)
3 = Major third higher than Osc 1 (Every C will sound as E natural)
4 = Perfect fourth higher than Osc 1 (every C will sound as F natural)
5 = Perfect fifth higher than Osc 1 (every C will sound as G natural)

There is a similar common question about getting no audio output from a
DW8000, which can happen if the patch parameters 13 and 23 are set to
zero. Your tuning issue might simply be these patch settings on 13
(low), 23 (high), and 24 (set to other than 1).

Someone already linked to a user manual, I always have them on my site
as well at www.DW8000.com, but I see my site has been down for a few
weeks. I just contacted my web host, it should be back up shortly.

I fixed the key clatter on mine by changing the "fabric" that dampens the key release.. Not a very hard fix, but requires you to completelly disassemble the keyboard..

Hello, Everybody!

This is only my humble opinion about the trouble:
assuming battery perfectly in order, and patches loaded correctly,
it seems to me that it could be a "freaking" matter. I once tried to
obtain new interesting sounds by opening the case and modding some
pots with a little screwdriver, so obtaining a whole mess.....Trying
then to fix the settings, with not a complete success.... I think I
saw a main tuning pot somewhere between the two main boards...I
think that some "clever technician" like me tried to turn it just to
find out what could have happened....I hope so that You could set
again in tune Your DW8000 simply working on it, using another
working keyboard or frequency known signal as reference. Oh, and
don't forget to keep the tuning slider exactly in the half of its
lane.
I hope also my english was good enough to make myself well
explained, and that You can receive again joy by playing with this
beautifully sounding machine!!

All the best,
Francesco Manduca-resistenzaaoltranza.
