DW6000 and DW8000 Waveforms

DW6000 and DW8000 Waveforms

2006-08-16 by Les

(sorry if this winds up being a double post. I got a failure notice
from Yahoo, so I'm trying again)

I came across an interesting site recently that has ROM images of the
DW6000's 8 waveforms:

http://erikhall.mine.nu/~ronny/dw6000/dw6000.htm

I have no idea what language the site is written in. Babblefish was
of
no help.

Tantalizingly, only half of the DW8000's waveforms are there.

I collect single cycle waveforms from old synths, (I know, but
everyone's gotta have a hobby), and I was wondering if anyone knew
where I could find the ROM images of the DW8000's 16 waveforms.

What's cool is to take these old waveforms and put them into a modern
sampler. Then create your own patches using the sampler's synth
architecture.

Thanks for any help.

It´s in swedish...
Mail me if you need translation =)

Thank you! I had no idea.

I really appreciate the offer. :-)

Fortunately, though, I found an online translator:

http://www.translationsoftware4u.com/translatefree.htm

Using it to translate the page, my impression is that it describes
replacing the 8 waveforms in the DW6000 with 8 waveforms from the
DW8000. That would explain why there's only 8 of the DW8000's
waveforms up on the site.

Shame. Would love to have all 16.

BTW, while we're on the subject of modifying the DW6000, here's
another page I came across:

http://www.strellis.com/dw6000.shtml

It describes modifying the DW6000 so that it contains 256 waveforms.
Wow!

Personally, I find the DW waveforms to be nothing that special,
compared to what's available in tons of free softsynths out there (and
it would be easier to 'grab' the waveforms from software than from a
hardware synth).

What I find more interesting is the DW's analog filter, which I would
love to run a freestanding VCO module through, if only the DW had an
analog input.

However, I do love taking samples of Prophet 5, OBX, Jupiter 8
oscillators and running them through my Korg DSS-1 (which is a
souped-up DW8000 with sampling).

In fact, you can probably get your hands on the rest of the DW8000
waveforms by checking out the disk library of the DSS-1, as most or
all of these waveforms were ported over to that synth, along with
larger samples.

We've come a long way since the early 80s, it's true. However, I
still have a fondness for those old waveforms, not just the ones in
the DW series but also the Prophet VS and Kawai K3.

I used to own a DSS-1 years and years ago. One of my regrets is
selling it. I didn't really know what I had on my hands. What a neat
synth.

This is a good suggestion. I've found some DSS-1 disk images. I can
examine their contents. However, parsing the waveform data from them
is another matter...

He he - thanks for plugging my site :)

I've just noticed that I made a mistake with the audio demos on the
page. If you would like to visit the page again, you can download the
mp3 demos.

The videos were fine though (except for my hammy performance!)

It was an interesting mod to do but taught me that the waveforms only
form a part of the sound. It's the filter and how it dynamically
affects the waveform that produces the greatest contribution to a sound.

However, with the right wavetable you can simulate a filter sweep ;)

I really need the schematics for a DW6000 or 8000 so I can try and get
the waves to sweep per voice and not globally i.e affects all voices
simultaneously.

Thanks

Chris

Hey, thanks! I dropped back by and had a listen. Nice!

I enjoyed those my first time by. "Don't touch, kids." :-)

I agree. I learned this back when I had a Korg DSS-1. I would use
the waveform drawing function and wonder why I wasn't noticing that
much difference in the patch between each waveform. Well, it's
because the filter was the main, as you say, contributor.

I've heard this with some of the Waldorf synths. Pretty cool.

Hey, if you ever need bandlimited versions of your waveforms, let me
know. I've written software for doing that type of thing. My
approach is to analyze the waveforms to get their harmonic spectrum.
Then create bandlimited versions, one per octave.

At any rate, thanks for a very cool site and demonstration!
