Korg DSS-1 disks images

Korg DSS-1 disks images

2006-04-01 by eraser127nl

Hi, I recently bought an second hand DSS-1. I already downloaden some
disk images but the problem is that my computer cannot read the 3 720K
disk I got with it. When I format a 1.44mb disk to 720k my diskdrive
won't recognise it so I can't copy the image to the disk (using
copyQM).

Anyone got a solution? Or is there a way to extract the images and
load it via midi?

I use WinXP.

Thanks in advance,

Siebe Pol, Netherlands

Hello,

the DSS-1 uses 800K Disks, not 720k. The PC drive electronics itself is
-able- to read/write them. CopyQM -also- writes the Disks under 95/98/ME
into 800K format, but XP doesn´t allow a "direct hardware access" onto
the drive, so CopyQM won´t work. I have modified Glen Stegners
DSS1-Disk-Images into "non-CoypQM"-800K-Images, because no other program
than copyqm is able to write copyqm-images (there is a prog outside
which can do that, but it also won´t work on 2000/XP). A direct 1:1 copy
from copyqm-image=>FDD is -impossible-, cause the copyqm-images have a
special header inside, which would be also written on the DSS-1 disk and
which the DSS would not understand.

So the only thing you´ll need is a Linux machine or at least a Linux
LiveCD and my modified images. Then I´ll give you the instructions how
to write them.

Greetings

Stef

Well, he could also just buy a very cheap (old) DOS-based PC and that
will work just fine for CopyQM.

Anyway, I am kind of interested in what you've done to the disk images.
If you can somehow find an XP-compatible disk image copier, then I think
this would be worthwhile and I would consider replacing the old CopyQM
disk images on my site. Until then, I'll stick with the old images and
CopyQM.

Re: [DW8000] Re: Korg DSS-1 disks images

2006-04-05 by Stefan Rinass

This -should- work with XP, it is able to read CopyQM-Images, but it
won´t work correctly:

http://www.seasip.demon.co.uk/Unix/LibDsk/#tools

i´ve tried it by myself on a XP machine with closed 720k-hole. Select
disc=>copy=>browse, select a .dsk-image, everything else leave to
auto-detect, next=>"drive/image to write", set this to "a:", driver
"ntwdm" (NOT qm, cause qm is a read-only driver, libdsk will crash, if
you select this driver for write operations . =>next=>format disk. The
program recognizes 80 Tracks, 5 Sectors/Track and writes the disk
correctly, but the DSS won´t read them ("unformated"). Maybe i have to
choose another output driver -or- the secor sizing is incorrect (maybe 5
sectors*256 bytes instead of 5 sectors*512 bytes/10 sectors*256 bytes).

But it seems to be the only solution under widnwos. All other programs
won´t work correctly (samdisk etc).

Greetings

Stef

I´ll take a look under linux what libdsk has written onto the disk,
maybe it has copied also the copyqm-header.

Ok, as it seems you also have to install this driver before using libdsk
and the ntwdm driver (was already installed on the XP machine)

Re: [DW8000] Korg DSS-1 disks images

2006-04-10 by Jez

Took me 4 hours of hard work to create my first useable DSS1 disk. In
the end, I followed most of the tips on Glen's website on a Windows 98
machine. No way of getting it to work under Windows XP, and I didn't
bother trying under Windows 2000.

The only way I've found of getting HD floppies to work with DD disk
drives is via CopyQM and Windows 98 or earlier. Which implies having
an old PC somewhere in reserve.

The same methodology works for the Roland MV-30 (I have one of them as
well) - You might get a bit further under XP is you research similar
issues with other bits of kit that use DD floppies. Windows 98 or
earlier is the only thing I could get to work though.

Re: [DW8000] Korg DSS-1 disks images

2006-04-11 by Stefan Rinass

Got it, OmniFlop works (with my images) !

http://www.shlock.co.uk/Utils/OmniFlop/OmniFlop.htm#Downloads

My image file:
http://www.phasereffect.com/pub/la.img

First you have to replace the original XP-Floppy-driver with the
Omniflop-Driver (system/hardware/device manager/disk drive/left
click/update drivers/manual driver selection/locate your unzipped
folder/select the .inf-File), then start omniflop=>format disk=>select
a:/ select the DSS-1 format, after successfull operation select "write
disk", then choose the .img-File, even set the format to "DSS-1", voilá!
You -must- pre-format the disk.
