Questionably functional DW-8000...?

Questionably functional DW-8000...?

2006-02-05 by altamontunion

Heyo,

I just recently acquired a DW8000 for $15. Solid! However, the owner
said that while the keyboard had been in storage, it has sustained
heavy water damage. The keyboard looked mint, so I scooped it up
anyways. If it didn't work, no worry, was worth a try.

Well, I get it home and realize he'd left the old C or D batteries in
the back, and they'd leaked everywhere. I took them out, plugged the
machine in, and fiddled around. I've never used a DW8000 before.

It was making noises, but the only noises it would make when I
pressed any key was this siren-esque descending BBEEEEEOOOOOOOO. I
decided to crack it open and replace the CR2032 battery.

Ouch.

The case was literally filled with rust, but it appeared that every
single component was still in the right place. It looked like the
only damage done was to the metal bottom! I spent all day cleaning it
out, and I replaced the CR2032 battery. (I hope my amateurish
soldering jobs were okay!)

I fired it up -- yep, still powers up and looks fine -- and I tried
using a SysEx program to load on patches. I can tell that MIDI is
working, because I can control the DW8000 with my computer.
Unfortunately, I've tried loading a bunch of different SYX sets, and
still all I get is that obnoxious siren noise. Any ideas?

It would seem that you still haven't used a DW8000, as the DW8000 does not
run off C or D battery power. You probably have a Poly800.

Maybe take a look at the top, see what it really is and write back?

Dw8000 did have a battery that looked like a D cell that was soldered in. Sounds like he has it back but doesn't have the sounds in right

Um, no. There are no D cell batteries or any battery even remotely the size
of a D battery in a DW8000, much less "batteries [plural] in the back".
There is a CR2032 battery on the mainboard, but he also mentioned that in
the same email.

He's got to be talking about a Poly 800 or similar, which can actually run
off C batteries.

D'oh!

Sure enough, I jumbled my words a bit. I acquired a DW-8000 AND a
Poly-800 at the same time; the corroded C cells were found in the
back of the Poly-800, not the DW-8000.

My DW-8000 has no compartment for C or D cells. The battery I
replaced (or attempted to) was the 3V CR2032 that was soldered onto
the one of boards inside.

Anyone know where WAV versions of the tape backups are? I'm still not
having any success w/ the SYSEX, and I haven't got around to checking
to see if the key contacts are corroded.

The cr2032 was a replacement but the original battery looked like a d cell battery that was soldered to the board.

Possible-as long the voltages are correct it doesn´t matter which type
of Batteries are in use (why it should?). But, shame on me, what is
difference between a "c" and a "d" cell? I only know aa/aaa, then their
typical "german" designations: Mono, Baby, Mignon, Micro (Photo?) etc...

Greetings

Ah, "c" is "baby", "d" is "Mono", right?

Awesome, you nailed it -- thank you Stef. Let's see if I can get this
$15 DW-8000 to rock!

Re: Questionably functional DW-8000...?

2006-02-09 by altamontunion

Well, I've just about given up. I've tried the TAPE reloading as the
manual explains, and it's not hearing anything, no matter what the
source of the sound is -- I've used different volume levels,
different known-working cables -- no luck. SysEx loading of patches
doesn't work, either, but I've only tried using one DW8000 software
that looks like it was coded for Win 3.1.

I think the contacts might not be in such good shape. Any suggestions
on cleaning / replacing 'em? And anybody got any good DW8000 SysEx
software?

Re: [DW8000] Re: Questionably functional DW-8000...?

2006-02-10 by Stefan Rinass

Well, i would suggest you to check out Midi-OX, a fantasic program for
SysEX-Files and Midi-Monitoring. It's possible to check out with a
speaker the signals itself, specially those which are coming from the
CPU-Board in order to find out where the problem is, but that's too
complex to explain. No sound can come from everything: Defect DCO's,
VCA's, VCF's..or a simple defect Volume potentiometer. The VCA can be
tested relative simple: Just turn the Volume 100% on the DW and 100% on
your amplifier (as loud as possible, so you'll only hear some backroudn
noise from the amplifier), then press a key on the DW. If you hear a
quiet "noise-shot", then the VCA's should be ok; maybe you'll even hear
a quiet sound from the VCO's. If the VCA won't work Even check out the
System Parameters #87 and #88, as far as i remember, one of them make
the play-range of the keyboard. Midi-OX has afair also a simple built-in
keyboard, just try to play a Midi-note to your DW.

While loading the tape files, do you see that the DW begins to write the
values into the memory (the DW -must- run/display -by itself- through
the programs 11-88 and some parameter Values while loading the wave
file)? If not, check out if your PC is loud enough while playback.

Greetings

Stef

Re: Questionably functional DW-8000...?

2006-02-12 by Glen Stegner

The DW-8000 editor/librarian made by Anthony Ruggieri (win 3.1) is still
a much better option than generic SysEx software, and it will run on
95/98/Me/2000/XP systems just fine. It allows you to do whole bank
transfers, as the DW8000 SysEx capability only allows for single patch
transfers (the software automatically loops 64 patch transfers by
itself, you'd have to code that yourself or do it manually using a
generic SysEx utility).

Also the DW8000 does not have DCOs or VCOs, it's purely digital
oscillators (DOs, if you will) or single-cycle SAMPLED waveforms.

Hm....

Quote:

"Oscillator operation

The PAI (phase angle increment) value and PAR (phase

angle register) value are added and the result is stored again

in the PAR. The PAR value is used as the wave table ad-

dress. The wave table stores different -harmonic- configura-

tion data for each octave on the keyboard.

IC47 (MB64H129) performs the processing needed to use

the PAR value as the wave table address.

Finally, data read from the wave table is converted to an

analog waveform by a D/A converter.

Time division multiplexing enables dual oscillator 6-voice

sound source capability.

Maximum simultaneous output of this system is 8 voices

x 2 oscillators.

Note: Given a sampling frequency of 50 kHz, PAI data

N = 2" x f/50 x 10‘ (where f is the pitch frequency)

is rounded to an integer value for N and converted

to a hexadecimal number."

Is this supposed to contradict what I said? Whom are you quoting? As
far as I can tell this just gives info about how the circiuts
interpolate the digital waveforms. Of course all digital waveforms come
out as analog in the output stage. Everything is analog at the output
stage or else you wouldn't be able to hear it. It doesn't mean the
oscillators are analog.

I know that they´ re not analogue, but the way how they build their
sound-"data" seems to be not the typical "sampling" (or "rompler" or
whatever). Harmonic Synthesis (as the DW6/8000 seems to use) isn´t the
typical "sample" Playback. After the signal leaves the CPU=>DAC-08 it is
-of course- analogue processed, but the DW (and also my EX-8000) seems
to use harmonic waveforms/synthesis in order to generate waves/signals,
-not- 1:1 Samples from a wavetable. I -know- the differences between
VCO/DCO/ROMPler (i have here 15 Synthesizers which working with
different type of Oscillators incl. "Rompler" and a few analogue
Drummers incl. Korg Mp7 and a CR78).

I´ve also built a few little Synths by my own, they´re working at the
moment with Microcontrollers and the digital output is also being
processed by a DAC-0800 (there i -also- use wavetables inside the
program to create waveforms). They are all connected with -one- slightly
better Microcontroller for choosing different waveforms/frequency
settings,/keyboard decoding blahblahblah, but they are -for me- also
DCOs, because they are -controlled- by another Processor, even they´re
in fact "wavetable-Oscillators".

Greetings

Stef

Re: Questionably functional DW-8000...?

2006-02-14 by Glen Stegner

Yes, I realize I simplified things by just calling them "sampled"
waveforms. You are right, the waveforms are built from the ground up (in
real time) using harmonic additive synthesis, however the basic
components of these waveforms (presumably sine waves) must themselves
have been sampled, just as they are in the DX7 and other FM synths.
