oh my... dw8000 audio input modification.

oh my... dw8000 audio input modification.

2006-01-21 by robert andrew scott

hey all !

i'm sorry that i wasn't moderating messages in a timely manner for a
while there. i was on an east coast tour with one of my bands..

anyway.. i've wanted to ask: does anyone have any ideas about how to
run external audio into the dw8000's filter, envelope and delay?

if someone has the schematics, i'm sure we can find the point where the
noise generator's output is passed as audio..

is anyone interested in working with me on this?

feel free to check out my recent vocoder, moog, arp, korg, and NES mods

Hello-
One of the things you'd have to deal with in this scenario is the fact that the DW has EIGHT filters & envelopes -- an external audio input to voice 1 would only sound when voice 1 was played, according to the note assignment algorithm in the synth's firmware.  It might be possible to feed the external audio into all eight channels & put the synth into mono mode;  but with the current low cost of DW8000s, it might just be easier to reomove the voice board from a non-working or damaged synth & construct your own device, centered around the filters & delay.

I wasn't planning to run the external input into voice 1..

The noise generator is run through 8 paths.. If the noise generator
was disconnected (via switch) and an external input passed instead of
noise, wouldn't that work just as well ?

Re: [DW8000] Re: oh my... dw8000 audio input modification.

It might --

The noise generator output can be interrupted by lifting the plus end of C61 on the voice board (a 10uf capacitor).  The external signal can theoretically be fed in through this capacitor.  Keep in mind the fact that this cicuit feeds into a dedicated VCA for the noise;  you'll have to have noise selected & turned up to hear anything.

Also, some experimentation will be required to find the right level &/or buffering for the incoming signal.

Let us know what you find.....
