Korg DW8000, Mono/Poly, MS-20...

Looks like a new board. Hope to see it grow. I currently have 2
korg boards in my line-up. One is a DW6000 which I suppose qualifies
for this group.I've had it since the late 80's and had retired it
when the internal battery went out, but recently I missed it and so
replaced the battery and it is up and running. I am now considering
a DW8000 but not sure yet. Just wanted to say hi to all and I'll
check back to see how this group comes along.

Welcome to the group. I've got both a DW6000 and a DW8000 and while they
sound similar, in my opinion, the DW8000 is so much more expressive because
of it's aftertouch. I've wanted one for years and finally bought one last
year and have been extrememly pleased with it. I don't do much more than
noodle with any of my music equipment, but the DW8000 is my favorite
keyboard by far.

Hi Louis,
Thanks for the welcome and the fast reply. I was thinking the same
thing about the DW8000's aftertouch. The other korg I use is one of
thosh ix300 Workstations so I am used to the velocity and aftertouch.
The ix is good for 'real' instrument sounds but I like the DW sound
for synth sounds (especially when they use a lot of that resonant
filter :o) I have seen some dw8000s on ebay and am even
considering trying to get one with the angel city turbo upgrade. For
my purposes it would be mainly so that the keyboard can be split
into different sounds. I wonder how well those things work?

My DW-8000 came from eBay, and aside from needing a minor cleanup it was
in really great shape. I've never heard of the Angel City turbo upgrade.
What is it? I'd be interested in finding out. My DW800

I can't tell you anything about it from my own experience but I will
copy and paste some stuff from an ebay seller's description which
tells quite a bit. I do know that they exist and I used to see them
advertising the upgrade in Keyboard Magazine back in the 80's. The
Angel City place was/is somewhere in Pennsylvania but I don't know
whether they are still in business. I think I can find some of those
old 80's mags around here somewhere....anyhow......here is some of
what the seller has to say..............

brand new battery in it I changed 2 months ago, I will leave the
patches I created in the unit, I do not have the factory original

That sounds pretty sweet... I've been hunting (as it looks like everyone
has) for a patch editor/librarian for my DW8000. I finally tracked down
a manual so I'm actually thinking of breaking down and writing my own
patch editor. I don't know if anyone else might be interested or not,
but to start it'll only be available on Linux (my development platform
of choice), but I may look towards making it work on Windows/Mac at some
point. I may possibly be getting a Mac PowerBook in the near future and
if I do that'll probably be my second target.

Any thoughts or ideas are welcome! :)

Sounds like a patch editor would be pretty welcome. Much of the 80's
gear is making a come back and the only editor I have seen for the
dw8000 is no longer supported by the guy who wrote it , though it is
still available for download on his web site.

Yeah, I've seen the editor, and downloaded it, source code and all. I
could never get it to work, and like the guy says on the page, getting
it to compile with newer compiles just doesn't cut it... That's partly
why I'd like to write a new one.

The other reason is that I use Linux, not Windows. I'd like to have something
that could work with some sort of "plug-in" system so that I could support
other gear that I have, such as my 2 TX81Zs, TX7, DW6000, and Juno-106. It'd
be really nice to be able to have a librarian to keep all those sounds
organized.

Then the last reason is just that it sounds like fun to write. I guess I'm
kinda sick that way. :) Anyway, it all boils down to whether or not I end up
getting the time to write it or not.

Hehe, I guess someone needs to be "that sick" or we wouldn't have
any software. Must be lots of really sick ppl running around. I'm
not a programmer myself but I know what you mean about the time
element though. I will probably be out of touch for the next 7 days
due to that very thing.
Do you happen to have any good sounds for the DW6000? I lost all
of mine when my internal battery died and those old original data
sheets are mostly unreadable. I never did have the programing
cassette. I do however have a wave file which I found on the
Australian Web with Copernicus. The guy made it himself but it isnt
very useful to me. It is just kind of neat that you can play a wave
file (data) into the back of the DW6000/8000 and get a full bank of
patches.

I haven't really played that much with my DW-6000. I got it just
before I got my DW-8000 and so it hasn't been played with much at all.
I'd really like to get my "studio" (if you can call it that) set up
so I could play with all my keyboards. Alas, we're back to the time
issue... :( I also need to get the tuning on the DW-6000 fixed. It's
slightly out of tune and the slider for that seems to be broken. :(

reviews on it for various types of synthesizers,
including both the DW6000 and the DW8000.

Where?? Where??? I ordered one from
www.marshallparts.com/manual_list.asp but it is
on "back order" and They don't know when it will
be in. I ordered it over 3 weeks ago!! Where did
you get yours?? I heard it gives specs for
Sysex? I was thinking of writting something too.
I also run Linux (debian), but the only editors
that I have been able to find are for windows.

Maybe we could collaborate on a patch editor. I've not found anything in my
searching so that's what lead me to decide I should write one. I haven't
really dug into my DW-8000 manual to find the SYSEX stuff, but I'd be
interested in writing something modular enough that it would allow for working
with other keyboards as well.

Which keyboard is the manual for? I've got one for the DW-8000, but not for
the DW-6000. I don't know how much difference there is (some I'm sure).

There is a tape input on the back and you can load a whole bank of
sounds in about 14 seconds. It works the other way too...you can
write a full bank of sounds onto a tape for backup or storage.

I have the DW6000 manual. The main differences I know about are the
velocity/aftertouch, dw6000 lacks the onboard delay, dw8000 has
twice as many waveforms in the ROM.

That would be fun. I've been programming for 4
years and I know C and C++, but designing isn't
my strong point, though I'm sure we could come up
with something. What language did you have in
mind? Hmmm.... this is getting off-topic. I
wonder if we need a DW8000-Development list. :-)

mono tape recorder. Is that true? I see the tape
in and out ports but is there a button on the
Korg to start uploading/downloading sounds?
One of the parameters perhaps?

On the dw6000 I have there are Bank/Parameter keys # 1-4 which
double (triple) as #1.save #2load #3.verify #4.cancel.
These are the keys involved with the tape interface.
