Poly-61

Poly-61

2004-05-06 by sparky2m4

Hi all! I just purchased an old Poly-61 and have two questions that
I can't seem to resolve looking in the manual. Is there a way to
restore factory settings? Is there a trick to using a modern
suequencer to trigger the Poly-61 (not midi) arpeggiator? If anyone
has worked with the 61 and wouldn't mind conversing, please let me
know. I should have it in a week or so. Thanks.

Mark,

I used to own a Poly61 many moons ago.

There is no way to restore factory patches on the front panel of the
Poly61. In fact synths did not generally have this kind of feature
until well into the 90s (even the popular M1 from 1988 didn't store
factory settings in ROM, you had send them from a PC via sysex).

Speaking of sysex, or MIDI for that matter, it doesn't exist on the
Poly61, but of of course you new that (unless it's the Poly61M which
has basic MIDI but no sysex). But I do believe you were able to
dump/load from cassette tape. So that means you will be stuck with
having to find a cassette tape of the original patch bank, or maybe
you can find a WAV file of this audio data somewhere on the net.
Look for Poly61 resource sites via Google, whatever.

Sorry I can't help you with the sequencer sync issue. As far as I
know there were no CV connectors on the back, but I could be wrong.
It was a long time ago.

Glen

Thanks! Now the fun part, let's see: download .wav, burn to CD, put in
stereo, record to tape, put in portable tape player, hope the Poly-61
can "hear" the data OK. I know, I asked for it!

I have the CD-Solution for my Polysix, Poly-800 and AX-73. Since i newer
know where my tapes are if i need them, i´ll decided to burn my tape
dumps on CD and use a ultra-old Player for playback. The same goes for
my C64; there are casette-games and progs which you can download from
the internet. Now use cas2wav to convert those games into wav-files,
burn them on CD, connect the CD-Player to the casette-input of the C64
and that´s all! With the Turbo-Tape-Loader you can reach upto 13.000
Blocks on one CD, which is <>3 Megabytes. Not much, but you have to
consider that a C64-one-side-Disk holds only 170 Kilobytes, and that
only 64KB fit´s into a C64, it IS much ;-)

I never knew you could plug in the cd player instead of the tape. That would be too easy. Duh!
Thanks. I'll give it a try when my Korg gets here (hopefully by the weekend).
