DTXpress Sysex

2004-02-10 by the_kin_doc

I'm nearing completion of my DTXpressII kit editor but I've hit a
problem which is looking like a bug in either the sysex
documentation or the unit's operating software. If anyone here has
any ideas to offer, or a contact at Yamaha they can send my question
to, I'd appreciate it.

Basically, I am using the Parameter Change Sysex message to edit the
kit and have no trouble getting the unit to respond correctly to
everything except the Song Tempo under KIT COMMON. If I send
Parameter Number (8 8 - -) I have no problem selecting the song.
However, the two Tempo Parameter Change messages do not appear to
work.

Parameter Number (8 9 - - ), which should set Tempo MSB, appears to
do nothing while Parameter Number (8 10 - -), LSB, always resets the
Tempo to --- no matter what the value of the data byte sent.

Anyone got the experience or contacts to solve this one?

Thanks,

Peter

Peter,

OGD has been handling the correspondence about the kit editor with
Yamaha. When he sees your post, he'll probably forward the question.
If you hear from someone else or figure it out yourself, let us know.

Peter,

Here is Yamaha's response to your question:

"Regarding the Parameter Change message he pointed out,
I found there is a bug in DTXPRESS, DTXPRESS II & III.

Problem:
  Module don't recognize Parameter Change
Model:
  DTXPRESS, DTXPRESS (II,III)
Detail:
Module don't recognize Parameter Change follows:
Parameter Number P1=8 P2=9 tempo select MSB
Parameter Number P1=8 P2=10 tempo select LSB

Bug fix will be made to next release of DTXPRESS III firmware."

So, I guess that setting won't be functional until the firmware is
updated.

Hmmm so the problem is documented to affect all modules (I, II, III), but
a bug fix is *only* forthcoming for the III? Can we verify that? If that
is not the case, what is the upgrade path for us lowly II and below
owners?

Thanks. It's a shame the bug is there but, on the other hand, it's
nice to know I'm not going mad :-).

I should have the program ready for beta testing in the next 48
hours.

Re: DTXpress Sysex

Vern,

I suspect that to cut costs the firmware in these modules is not
flash RAM so to change the firmware would require a chip change.
While this isn't too hard (assuming the PROM is socketed) it does
raise all sorts of warranty issues if you do it yourself and is not
for the faint hearted. It may be that Yamaha will only update an
existing DTXpress III as a service request, or perhaps not at all if
it is more complicated than swapping a socketed PROM.

In that worst case scenario the bug may only be fixed for people who
buy the unit made after the fix is installed in the production
model. This may not be until they have used up there existing stock
of PROMS.

We will wait to see what happens.
