The update Rom Chip for the DTXPRESSII

The update Rom Chip for the DTXPRESSII

2003-07-01 by oldguydrummer

I installed the new chip and went through 90 percent of menus/voices.
They are no changes. The module now chokes on all zones 1-8. While I
had the module open I snapped a few photos of the inside.
One of the unassembled unit, one with the PC-board with the zone 1-8
connectors shifted out of the way, one of the "ROM CHIP" and one of
the backup battery.

Since the user kits/trigger settings are saved elsewhere, nothing was
lost in the surgerical procedure. I works like a charm.

What is interesting is that the references to the PCY150 (three zone
cymbal) is still there and the trigger input for zones 6 and 7 still
have settings for ride/rideE/rideC (bow/edge/cup) which has to be
accomplished on a stereo cable only. So somewhere in the R&D
backrooms of Yamaha there has to be a three zone cymbal in the works.

Now if I can just get two more of these chips for the other modules I
have.

> Do you know if any recent dtxpress II kits come with the new rom
chip,
I don't know that answer. I think either someone who has bought one
in the last week or so may be better able to say. My guess is no. I
would think that it would take sometime to get into the production
line. They would want use up the original stock of chips first, since
for most user, there would be no real benefit to having the update
chip.

It was sent to me free of charge. If you have just the basic kit with
one or two additional pads, there really is no need for the updated
chip. I needed it because I had three DTXPRESSII modules and was
using zones other than 2,6,7 to attach dual zone cymbal pads and
could not get choking to work on zones 1,3,4,5.

I sent an email to Yamaha support about 2 months ago asking why the
zones 1,3,4,5 don't choke on the DTXpressII module, like they do on
the DTXpressI module. They confirmed the problem and verified it with
a factory production engineer.

This is the reply I got on May 27, 2003:

[Hi Rob,

I have placed an order for the (3) IC's. You will receive them as
soon as they become available.

I just received the first chip on Saturday. I am not sure why the
three weren't sent together. I need to follow up on that.
