Yamaha StickMaster Support

Yamaha StickMaster Support

2003-06-06 by Bob

First off, mad profs to all the active group members. I joined the
group only a week or two ago and have learned a lot. I got my
DTXpressII hooked up to my PC and was able to use DTXChange successfully.

I downloaded the StickMaster software just for the heck of it and have
it working in a "handicapped" mode.

The first question, does anyone have a number or email account for
support of the StickMaster software? I couldn't find one anywhere.
Since I downloaded the software, I didn't get a manual or CD. All I'm
working with is the online help. Is there better information available?

Thanks.

Can you be more specific about the proble you are having? As you have
DTXchange working there is no reason why StickMaster should fail.
Have
you checked out the setting on the I/O tab under preferences? The In
and Out Midi devices must be set correctly. Also the Sound Generator
should be selected as "Hardware" as you want the drums in the drum
module to trigger.

You should probably go back to YamahaMusicSoft.com for help. They do
have a customer service form at http://www.yamahamusicsoft.

Sorry to barge in on your conversation, chaps, but what is
this "StickMaster" software of which you speak?

Hi Stewart

StickMaster is a very fun tutorial program that is available from
Yamaha Music Soft at
http://www.yamahamusicsoft.com/software/stickmaster/

It connects the DTX??? brains to the PC and watches how you play each
of the exercises. It gives you points for hitting the right pad at the
right time as it plays a piece of music and shows you the tab.

I figure it teaches good muscle memory but not great style. That said
it is like a video game where you have to drum to get points. I
thought it was well worth the US$25.

Thanks for the response.

Maybe I'm expecting too much. I know the PC software
is detecting the triggers from my DTXpress since I'm
scoring during the test (MIDI IN is set to USB MIDI
1X1). However, I was expecting to hear both the
music, drums, and metronome in my headset attached to
my DTXpress (through the midi in of the DTXpress).
Currently I'm only hearing the music.

In the StickMaster preferences, when I have the MIDI
OUT set to USB MIDI 1X1 (my MIDI interface), I don't
hear anything but the music in my DTXpress headset.
When I set the MIDI OUT to AUDIOPCI MIDI Synth I hear
the music, drums, and metronome from the PC speakers.
If I also check the "Echo Output MIDI event from the
instrument" I hear my DTXpress drums that I'm playing
from the PC speakers.

I'm trying to hear everything from my DTXpress
headset. It doesn't seem like the PC is sending the
MIDI signals to the DTXpress or that the DTXpress
isn't receiving/playing them. I'm going to try some
of the shareware MIDI monitors to see if the signals
are flowing.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Let me know if you
need to know more settings.

Thanks.

Hi Bob

> Maybe I'm expecting too much.
You are not expecting too much at all. I have my system set up so that
I hear everything in my headphones. That is the music, the PC drum
line (when not muted) and my own pad responses. So stick with it and
you will get it working without needing your PC speakers at all.

I am not using a USB link cable but one going to my joystick port.
This should only change the drivers required. The help files do detail
the USB connection requirements.

Have you read the section of the help under "Preparation"/"Connecting
to a MIDI instrument" and the following section "DTX Series Settings"?
This second section reminds you to set "UT MIDI RECEIVE" to [10PC=off]
.

The "Lets Begin" section of the help shows a screen shot of the
preferences tab for I/O showing USB in and out selected. Note the tone
generator is set to "Hardware Device".

Sorry for not being able to put my finger right on the problem here
but rest assured that it is possible to get all of the sounds
happening in your headphones through the module.

Good luck

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Yamaha StickMaster Support

Thanks again.

At least now I know it is possible. I fired off an
email to support at yamahasoftmusic. Hopefully they
can help me out.

I have my settings just as you describe. I put on a
midi trace and saw the triggers arriving from my
DTXpress, but I didn't see anything hitting the PC's
MIDI OUT.

I'm suspecting a Windows98 issue or maybe my USB
interface.

Do you know of anyother way to trigger your drum
sounds on the DTXpress from the PC???

Thanks again.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Yamaha StickMaster Support - PROBLEM SOLVED

2003-06-13 by Bob V

Thanks to everyone for their assistance.

I'm now able to get the music and drums to play
through my DTXpress Headset (from the PC's midi out to
the DTXpress's midi in). I ended up resetting the
DTXpress to the factory settings since I couldn't find
the "one" setting that was the problem. In the
initial joy of downloading/uploading sysex files after
installation, I think I downloaded something that
changed more than just a drumkit on my DTXpress. Word
of caution, make sure you know what is in the sysex
files you are downloading.

Secondly, and a little off topic, I do have a problem
with StickMaster displaying it's menu items on my
Windows98 machine. I'm working with support, and it
is due to my PC's support for PNG image files. I
haven't fixed this yet but am continuing to work with
support. I think it's time for a new pc (and one
where my kids haven't downloaded every product known
to kid-kind).

Thanks again.

Re: Yamaha StickMaster Support - PROBLEM SOLVED

Hi Bob,

An option to a new computer would be a hot-swap drive bay with
removeable tray (ie; http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?
ViewItem&item=2735071461&category=19570) Not suggesting that seller,
just an example.

I have 4 different tray/HD/OS systems to keep all my stuff separate
(games/music/internet/video editing). The trays have a lock/key to
keep prying fingers out. Used hard drives are cheap, but you get what
you pay for, so...

Good luck,

Steve

Thanks SKirby.

I'm in the processing of buying a new home PC. I'm
definitely going to take your advise and start with
your approach from day one.
