PROBLEM SOLVED...HEARD FROM MARTIN @ YAMAHA

PROBLEM SOLVED...HEARD FROM MARTIN @ YAMAHA

2003-02-25 by Jade <jadiebooshkie@yahoo.com>

Guys,
I just got off the phone with Martin, Yamaha's Midi Guru for the DTX.
What he had me do was check the DTX module, by taking a midi cable,
and plugging it from the midi out to midi in, I then went to UT mode
to the on UT MIDI SETUP...he had me TURN *OFF the Loc1=...then we
went to kit1, I hit the pad...we got nothing, after that, we did a
FACTORY RESET. I then plugged the DTXII MIDI IN to the KITI MIDI
OUT...went to kit #1 then MADE SURE the KITI was set to CH 10, and I
assigned a MIDI note to the KITI of 0-5-1 to input 1 where my ride
cymbal is connected, I then tapped the cymbal, and VOILA'...I GOT A
RIDE CYMBAL SOUND!!
He told me I do NOT use the UTILITY mode to set the notes for any
pads I have plugged into the KITI, I can just go into the VOICE
menu for a certain KIT and find a note for a specific pad, and
manually assign it to the KITI. We will see what happens when I
plug other pads in, and as soon as my clamps come in, I will be able
to test this along with the bell of my Visulite.
Walt and Underneatheaven...I HOPE this works for you. If not,
please call Yamaha, their direct number (ya gotta pay for the call)
is (714)522-9000 California time...they open from 8-5...ASK FOR
MARTIN- THE MIDI APPS SPECIALIST!!! The toll free number is 1-888-
892-6242, you will have to speak to the operator at Yamaha, tell
them you need to speak with the above mentioned guy. Do NOT be
surprised if you are assigned a case number, and have to wait a day
or so...they WILL get back to you. If any of you guys have
questions, please feel free to contact me via this forum.
We now KNOW there is NO flaw in the DTXII, it is speaking the same
lingo as the Midi Kiti...and let's all hope and pray that it works
for UNH, and his PM-16,and the other guys who are experiencing the
same problems we had.
One more thing...I have to praise Yamaha for their customer service
support that I received. More than once they have returned my
calls, and helped me out when a pad died. That is more than what I
hear thru the grapevine about Roland. I think we should all feel a
sense of satisfaction and security that we are with Yamaha (they
also make good motorcycles), and that they care about their DTX
customers. In this day and age, that is hard to find in the
corporate world!
I also whish to again say a great big THANK YOU to Walt and Ed and
the rest of you guys for your troubleshooting skills, encouragement
and concern, and patience- it can't be said enough times that you
ALL are a great bunch of guys, and I am very proud to be a member of
this group!
With much humble appreciation,
Jade

Hi Jade,

As I read through your note I get the impression that
Yamaha did make a good change between xpress I and
xpress II that may be of interest to other's in the
group who had contemplated adding MIDI > Trigger
interfaces - and that is how the drum map is used.

If I am interpreting this correctly it is a good
change (Scott, if you're reading this it could be a
change from what we talked about last night), because
it would mean that the xpress II can now save the MIDI
note numbers for externally connected pads within a
user drum kit. The xpress I only saved locally
attached pad voice assignments in the user kit.

I think I'll put a call into Martin to confirm this.

Walt,

I've advised Jade to ask Martin how to make sure that note numbers
from the dtxII saved on an external device don't get different
voices when kits change on the dtxII. That's the sticky point. You
and I used the utility menu to find unassigned notes that we could
use. Is Martin suggesting otherwise? That would be a change. But
then what use is the note-changing facility in the utilty menu? So
now both Jade and Walt have similar messages out to Martin. Because,
as it stands now, we haven't eliminated all of the confusion.

Whoo!! This rocks, atleast now I know the DTXpressII can actually
do the external midi stuff! I'm going to try this today either
before work or after work. I'm so excited!! One question though
jade, you said you did a factory reset, was this on the dtxII module
or kiti? Thanks, and I'll let you guys know how it went soon!!

Martin called back. The UTILITY mode can be used IF
the midi note you want to use is already taken, which
would be indicated by 2 pads playing the same note.
In that scenario, you WOULD have to access the UTILITY
mode and change the note to one other than the one in
use.
Hope this helps!!

I did it on the DTX...You will LOOSE all your own
created kits, before ya do it, I'd advise you to write
down all your individual pad settings so you can
re-create your kit. I hope it works out for you..keep
me posted...if not...then give Martin a call.

Jade, you also said you plugged your midi in to your midi out and
and tested the dtx by turning off the loc1. did you mean u plugged
the midi in and out between the kiti and module? Thanks! I think
I'm going to give Martin a call though! I guess it would better to
use the number thats gonna cost me huh? How much does it cost?
Thanks!
