Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

Hey yall,

I recently bought the dtxpress (not the II), but I had the 
chance to get the II.  I still got the original because 1) it
was $150.00 cheaper, and I don't have a job, 2)I don't need the
accomodation for a double kick, I play single, 3)The sounds are
the same, 4)I don't travel with my rack, so I don't need the
ultra quick set-up, 5)I need the 3 zone snare, but not for $150.00, 
and 6)the cymbals and pads are more like the v-club now (with a kind
of brushed velour finish) but the regular ones are just fine.

So if you need the double-kick, flexible rack, and 3 zone snare,
pay the extra money.  If not, the regular dtxpress still rocks!
And most places you can get it for $799.00 out the door.  I got 
mine for $750.00 out the door with a free drum throne. How bout that?

Congratulations on your new kit - and for that
perspective on how you came to the decision you did -
thanks.  I think it will help others that are
considering the same options as you did.   

I was also interested in your comments about the new
pads having a different texture to them - it has been
hard to pick up subtile details like that from the
limited information that seems to have come out of
Yamaha so far.

To answer your question, the pads and cymbals on the II are 
different from the dtxpress I in the way that leather and suede
are different, but both from a cow.  The dtxpress I pads and
cymbals are a slick rubber that can be wiped down.  The 
dtxpress II pads and cymbals are made from a kinds of rubber or
substance that has a soft, furry, peach like feel to them.  Like
a velour or an old worn in pair of jeans.  In other words, I wouldn't
wipe these off.  The crash cymbal no longer has a lip where you grab
it to choke.  It simply has a line etched into the cymbal designating
the area to choke.  The cymbals are dimpled, with a hammered 
appearance.  All in all, they look very, very nice.  But I don't
feel the playability differs much.

P.S. Walt, I took my pedal back, and ended up getting the throne for
free, hence the $750.00 out the door as opposed to the $820.00 I
told you before.

where can I get the dtxpress II at the lowest price?

Hi carfuen2001,

That can almost change day to day.  The 'standard'
price seems to be $999, which should include shipping
from most dealers.  I think I have seen it listed for
less,  but I am getting older every minute - and you
can always call them directly to see if they are
willing to improve on their listed price.  Many will
also price match.  Also, the more you buy the more of
a discount you can get.  So if you are going to need a
pedal, sticks and a throne, get a package quote from
them.  Be sure to find out if they have what you want
in stock, or if they have to order it.    

If you want to find the dealers that sell on the web
(or at least post their stock and prices), use Google
(or your favorite search engine) to find matches on
dtxpress, dtxpress II or yamaha dtx, and you find most
of them.
