Hi-hat stand any good?

Hi-hat stand any good?

2008-08-05 by Nick Carroll

I am using a DTX brain with an old set of pads - without the
specialised hi-hat stand/pad. Can someone please tell me what it's like
using that hi-hat? Do you get a different sound by hitting the edge of
the pad, as opposed to tapping your stick on the top? Does it sound
realistic?

I've played both the standard pad-and-pedal setup on my son's
DTXplorer and the RHH hi-hat pad & stand on my DTXpress 3 special.

I prefer the "proper" hi-hat pad, it allows me to use my existing hi-
hat stand and to position the pad as I would a real hi-hat, and thus I
can play the edge or the top and get the two different sounds just as
I would on the real thing. It just seems more natural, and certainly
works better for the rock style I'm mostly playing with the tendancy
to want to play the edge most of the time. One difference compared to
a real hi-hat is of course the actual pad doesn't doesn't physically
open and close, just the centre part moves up and down with the pedal
rod.

Does it sound realistic? Well that's down to the sounds chosen in the
brain and how you operate the pedal. The open/close action seems to be
just as controllable as the basic pad-and-pedal unit.
