Phantom Power Question

Phantom Power Question

2007-03-18 by mdandkfd

Is there any problems associated with connecting my dtxpressII to my
Behringer 1832 mixer via a 1/4" - xlr cable? I usually have a condensor
mic also attached to the mixer which means phanton power is turned on.
The tech at my local music shop said I would get a better signal with
the xlr connector but the phantom power issue concerns me.

I can't imagine that on a level playing field, the signal from the DTX
would improve noticeably through a cable with an XLR end; after all,
the point of a balanced cable is noise reduction, which doesn't seem
relevant in this case. No matter. The phantom power issue gives me a
scare, too. You might cause some damage, or, at the very least,
significant hum. You can't defeat phantom power on each input? Too bad.

There is a button on each Behringer mixer where you can turn off the
phantom power.

DON'T, I repeat, DON'T turn it on!!! You can really do extensive harm
to your module!! You could damage the outputs of the gadget.

It's the same with condenser mics. If you attach them to the mixer
with the phantom power tuned on, you'll almost surely kill it in an
instant. When using mics, turn it off, wait for some minutes, plug the
mic in, then turn phantom power on. After use, turn off phantom power,
wait for at least 2-3 minutes (but do longer), then plug out the mic.
