Recordability

2001-08-23 by chitsman@silcom.com

Hi Everyone,
I'm wanting to ask any and all if you have taken the DTXpress into
the studio to record, and if so what was your experience? I am trying
to decide if I should shell out the extra money for the Roland V-
Custom, or can I work with the DTXpress kit? I have been reading
through many of the posts here, and I am encouraged by everyones love
for the DTXpress. You all seem like a great group and very supportive
of new comers to the group!

Thanks for your responses.

Cary

Hi Cary,
Depending on what quality you require, the kit may be Ok. I personally at this point in time
am disappointed with the sound of the DTXpress as a recording kit. The quality of the D/A
is way below the rest of my set up. I used to use a Roland SPD 20, and I must say that I
found the quality of this unit far better for recording, However it did not have the play-ability
of the DTXpress. Therefore I think that the roland TD6 would be a better choice in hind sight.
the Roland V series would be way ahead of the DTXpress, but of course at a premium price
tag. I find that I get a pretty impressive sound playing the DTXpress through a Peavey KB300
Keyboard Amp. The next thought is to mike the KB300 with my AKG solidtube and record that
as a source. I know that it should make little difference via a DI, but it seems to give the DTX a kick
up the Arse (Fanny for you guys in the States). If anyone has any great patches or tips for recording
the DTXpress I would, (as I am sure would Cary + others) be keen to here from you.
Best regards to the group,
Jules Freeman (Ourgate studios) Southampton UK

Re: [DTXpress] Recordability

I've been using the DTXpress in my home studio for
about 6 months now and it's OK for guide tracks. But
in the cold light of DI, the sounds are nowhere near
as good as an acoustic kit. My main gripe is that
whatever kit you use, the overall sound is thin and
uninvolving. There's a lack of stereo wideness -
obviously you can't use overheads for ambience. The
dynamics are quite flat although you'll need a
compressor to control the peaks coming from the kick.
Because what you get on your track is what comes from
the box's output, there is little you can do with the
final recorded material except maybe EQ and
compression.
For serious recording, I'd not use the DTXpress unless
I had a certain sound programmed that I couldn't get
anywhere else. Its sounds just don't hold up to the
close scrutiny of a studio recording environment.

For live work, however, the DTXpress is superb.
Through the right PA, it sounds as good as any
acoustic kit - if not better. The sound is more
controllable and everything's ready mixed. It's easy
to set up and take down. I love using it for gigs. I
love the way people come up after the show and drool
over it. I wouldn't change it for the world. (well,
maybe a new set of V-Drums ;)
