question about midi tracking to different channels

Whats up everybody I've got a question... I'm trying to record midi to different channels in my sequencer, however I can't save the kit patch/channel information between power ons and power offs. Does anybody have any idea how to make and save a user kit, that doesn't get erased or reset when I open a new file in my sequencer. Thanks for all help... E
