Re: [DTXpress] What is a cymbal choke and can electronic drums do them?????/

2000-12-05 by Mark T. Owen

Answer: A fast "crash" or "splash", that is choked by grabbing the edge of the cymbal with the other hand right after you strike. Commonly used for accents, often accompanied by the kick drum for additional punch. And only more expensive rigs like the Roland V's are actually capable of this effect. It requires a different technology in the edge of the pad, plus the "brain-power" to recognize the action of grabbing an edge. A similiar effect can be set up by customizing a crash or splash in the DTX to have a real fast decay. Experiment!
