It sounds like the kick pad was overloading - hence the dropouts.  I
don't know why the attenuation switch should overdo things -on my
DTXpress III it still didn't reduce the volume enough on the
ConcertCast.  Maybe the attenuation switches are different on the
DTXpress I.  Maybe the Gain & MVel setting still need some adjustment?

Anyway, I have posted the circuit I use for adding a 100k pot to the
ConcertCast to get the gain just right.  I use Gain=99 Mvel=1 on the
DTXpress module.  I settled on these values because they give me the
maximum dynamic range from the pad.  I set the pot so that I have to
really whack the pad to get it to register 99% on the trigger menu. 
Then even the gentlest of touches also register.
