You should get the main pad sound without any programming.  Most of
the built in kits have rim sounds programmed as well.  If you are
getting nothing from the main pad then you have most likely a wiring
problem.  In particular, make sure the diodes are the right way round.
 The arrow points to the bar, which is the black line on the diode. 
Try shorting out D2.  Check you have the connectors wired correctly.
Tip to piezo, transistor collector to the ring.  Otherwise it is
likely to be a short circuit.
