Download Patches

Download Patches

2003-02-25 by rickyannotta <rickyannotta@yahoo.com>

I would like to check out some of the patches everone has created but
I don't have a computer setup for music production yet. I do have
access to a computer, is there any way to do this?

Thanks
-Rick

Rick you didn't give us much to go on... i.e. what kind of
computer "you have access to" (Mac, PC, etc.), whether it has a MIDI
interface, whether the computer and the Evolver can be co-located,
etc. In any case, here are the basics of what you're going to have
to do (be sure to read all steps before proceeding):

1. You'll need to download the various patches/sequences of interest
from the "Files" section here in the Yahoo group. I assume you can
do that, since you're able to send email, and therefore must have
access to a computer connected to the 'net.

2. For those files that are zipped (compressed into a single archive
file), you will need a utility such as WinZip, ZipMagic, or Stuffit
to "unzip" the files.

3. Armed with your collection of .syx (SysEx) files, you are going
to need access to a computer that has a MIDI interface. Note that
many computer sound cards have a "joystick" port that can also be
used as a MIDI interface, but you'll have to buy a proper cable.

4. You are going to have to connect the computer's MIDI OUT to the
Evolver's MIDI IN to be able to send SysEx files from the computer to
the Evolver. If you want to SAVE (i.e. backup) patches from your
Evolver to the computer, you will also want to connect the Evolver's
MIDI OUT to the computer's MIDI IN.

5. The computer will need to have some sort of MIDI/SysEx utility
for sending/receiving SysEx data to/from the Evolver. If the
computer is a PC, I'd recommend MIDIOX, which is an excellent program
(more on that below).

6. Refer to the topic in the Evolver forum at EX5Tech
entitled "Using MIDI-OX to Save & Load Evolver Patches" for detailed
steps on this subject. Here's a direct link:
http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?
ubb=get_topic&f=23&t=000013

(Note: If your email client or the Yahoo group splits the link above
into two lines, you may have to copy/paste it into your browser
address bar.)

7. This is probably the most important step. After previewing the
patches/sequences, be sure to drop a line of thanks to the author
(s). It's pretty discouraging to spend a lot of time programming a
bunch of patches, freely sharing them with everyone, and then not
getting so much as a word of acknowledgement that anyone even
listened to them! Let the authors know that their work is
appreciated, tell them what you liked and didn't like, and you'll
really encourage them to share more of their work with the
community. You might even become motivated to cook up some of your
own sounds and do the same!

Good luck!

Thanks again Ski - I have a CPU in my apartment with the evolver, not
setup for music production just for surfing the net. I don't know if
the CPU has a midi interface, I'll have to check later and see if
there are any ports on the soundcard I can connect to. Where can I
get MIDIOX? Is a a free application? (I haven't checked out your
link yet)

I'll be sure to give feedback on the patches, I look forwar4d to
seeing what others have been doing with the evolver. I'm pretty new
to this and only can do it in my spare time - so seeing what others
are doing helps immensely!!!

Re: Download Patches

Sure thing, Rick.

Once again, all the MIDIOX instructions and links are in the forum
topic linked in my previous message.

Personal preferences for "mailing lists" vs. "forums" aside, I think
that a forum topic is a better place to put reference information
like this. It's a LOT easier to search for and find in a forum
topic. Not to mention that you have the ability to EDIT the
information when you find you've made a mistake! :)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
