PEK voice expansion mod

PEK voice expansion mod

2009-08-19 by wasteking1

the idea of creating a 'polyevolver voice expansion mod/kit' has been pitched to DSI and the tech support guy thought it was a great idea and sent the idea on to Dave. (at least 4 more voices ---mounted INTERNALLY--yes, there is a LOT of empty, unused space inside that metal case). It seems that the latest Prophet and evolver Pot mods show the company is willing to improve/alter their models to accomodate user demand. So lets all contact DSI DIRECTLY and say that a voice expansion would be a great/desired product and to go market it. (maybe they could even include a new trick or two in it to make it more desireable?) these new devices like the tetra4 show just how little physical space 4 voices actually takes up, and the PEK is set up to be chained to additional voices already. Ive already heard there is some interest. ( i always wondered why there was only 4 in the PEK , but 8 in the cheaper prophet)

Here's the reply from Tech Support @ DSI:

----------------------
We are not going to be offering a voice expansion module for the Evolver series. The Poly Evolver Rack was the expansion box for the Evolver line so adding an additional Rack would be the way to expand on it. We are considering a re-release of the Rack if we get enough interest so check back periodically for updates.
Many thanks,

It's definitely a step!

funny how Tracy was far more enthusiastic when i emailed him about the idea a month or two ago.... He thought it was a great idea. The mod /kit is OBVIOUSLY very possible to do. and dragging around an extra unit (the rack model) in addition to your keyboard is simply STUPID--if they ever expect people to want to use it live, on stage.(or anywhere out of a studio set up ) Perhaps they have difficulty admitting its limitations publicly to the marketplace. I suggested simultaneously releasing an updated model option --the PEK-08 --- an 8 voice model. That would NOT diminish future sales, but would keep them competitive by releasing improvements. I SAY--- HAMMER THEM WITH EMAILS--- they will have to respond to their fans/customers. they have before.

I bet the reason for this is that they are probably going to re-release the PEK with additional voices. I heard from a pretty reputable source that they were planning on releasing an 8 (or 16) voice evolver a couple of years ago - hopefully that rumor didn't materialize in the form of the prophet08.....

It's worth noting I think that there's a good deal more going in Evolvers as compared with the Prophet/Mopho/Tetra architecture. It's not as simple as adding a few more voice / filter chips - for a start you need the DSP to do the digital oscs, delays, HPF, distortion etc., and you need those additional AD/DA stages to integrate the two as well. So it's quite a bit more complicated and certainly needs more parts.

I wonder how difficult it would be to remove the electronics from the
PER and install them into the PEK to make a 4 voice expansion ourselves.

well, even if more involved than just 4 chips. , they can, and have, done it--- perhaps there is some greater cost, but its not any huge amount more research and development... the kit would be mostly a stripped down PER --- mounted INTERNALLY. with only the minimum parts .

Yes they have done it, but as you know the PER was (and PEK is) relatively expensive. The reason for this being that each Evolver voice is literally an entire Evolver board with all the digital control stuff, DSP and AD/DA convertors that entails. I suspect that in the case of the ProMoTetra they can use a single digital processor connected to multiple Curtis chips for the voices, and there's also no need for the DSP or AD/DA business, so I think you can see how it's much simpler and cheaper to do.

It's possible there could be a way of redesigning the Evolver with more powerful processors but that would be a big development job.

I love what the Evolver can do but I also reckon the Tetr4 is a great move. A lot can be done with those analogue voices and I think they've made some good decisions in the way the modulation options have been tweaked.
