Thinking about the Voyager Vs. The PEK

Thinking about the Voyager Vs. The PEK

2006-01-05 by hitjob311

First, Hello to all.

I have a Voyager Signature edition that I got when they first came
out, and have found that though it is more or less *the* bass sound
everyone is after, I personally dont use it all that much. I have a
very difficult time getting more modern, less prog rock type sounds
from it, and for what I make (thinking dance, trance, industrial) it
comes across as a little mellow, maybe even a bit too meaty...?

So, being that the Voyager is worth a smidge more than the PEK, and
after spending time with a PEK at Guitar Center, I am thinking of
making the switch, and perhaps just buying a Voyager Rack down the line.

I guess I am looking for opinions, people that have made the switch,
dos and donts, moral support ...?

Thanks!

Well, of course your going to get a certain opinion from the people
here, but to put it mildly, I would switch in a heartbeat!

The Voyager, while a great instrument really is over hyped (in my
opinion). If your after that moog sound, then the voyager is perfect.
but if your after *new* sound, then the PEK is definitely where its at.
I love mine, and it made the "will never sell unless faced with greivous
bodily harm" list withing an hour of getting it home. Im actually
planning on a PER to expand it to 8 voices, mainly for pads and such, if
that says anything.

I didn't make any switches but do produce dance music
like yourself. I have a PEK and a Voyager Rack. The
Voyager is the pinnacle bass instrument IMHO but I'm a
Deep and Funky House guy. :)
And you can't have the FUNK without a Moog synth.

You can reduce the meat by using waveforms that have
less harmonic content (triangle and a close pure
square wave) from the oscillators and by syncing the
oscillators. Try this and play with the filter a bit.

The PEK is the one I'm having the problem with but
find it much easier to get what I'm looking for from
the digital oscillators instead of the analog one's.
The analog oscillators will do wonders for you in
Industrial and Trance but don't seem to be working for
me in Deep House.

It's all in finding the right tools to do the job. :)
