Once again, as I said below, take your Roland keyboard synth out of 
the equation.  Keep things ultra simple as you're learning and 
dealing with problems, and work with the Evolver ONLY.  You don't 
want to be wondering if your problem could be a lack of understanding 
of the Evolver, or a bad MIDI connection, or an improperly set MIDI 
transmit/receive channel, or...  get the picture?  :)

If you remove all the MIDI cables, work with only the Evolver, and 
get out the manual to read the "Sequencer Operation" section, I'm 
confident that you'll get it working just fine.  If not, let me know, 
and I'll write up a little step by step procedure for a simple 
example, and post it in the Evolver forum at EX5Tech.  Such a 
procedure won't be much different than the manual, though!

Once you get your feet on the ground with the Evolver alone, then you 
can hook up the JX-3P again, and begin exploring additional 
sequencing methods.
