Dave Smith Instruments SYNTHESIZERS

I'm looking for some help to learn this beast.  I like to program my 
own musical phrases and tweak them.  I toy around with my evolver as 
a synth, and I find something cool, I try to create a sequence.  
First I set a destination to a oscillator frequency then go into 
sequencer mode, set it so evolver is programmable from a keyboard and 
then...the notes sound nothing like they did in Synth mode or don't 
change pitch at all! It's been frustrating as I haven't even been 
able create simple phrases, basslines etc.. 

There's really no beginner information available anywhere. Where do 
others start when they want to program their own patches or tweak out 
existing ones?
