Optional Software

Optional Software

2015-01-14 by reubenfinger@...

Hello Everyone,

I scored another Casio FZ-1 with a functioning screen, and have got HXC (am keeping the other one for spare parts or maybe cable both up).

As part of the HXC FZ specific download images is an optional software.hfe image. It loads up but the software doesn't appear that much different than the main menu. I was under the impression that there was a loop/fade optimizer and a midi player/recorder, but they don't seem to be included.

Does anyone have access to the optional software disk, and is it possible that an image exists of it that can be downloaded in a similar way to the FZF's online and in the files section?

Thanks for any help at all, even if someone says that it is a lost cause

I believe I have the floppy files for the extended screen menu, but I don't know the formats etc.
Like as not I can make Floppy copies. But transferring files to pc has been the problem for me. I will look at the floppies tomorrow to see what is there.

That might be the optional disk for the FZ-20M, since it used up internal space for the SCSI drivers, meaning that things like the wave synth were no longer permanently available and had to be temporarily loaded in from disk.

Thank you Lee that would be excellent and most appreciated, I'll do a little research myself on the formats and see what I can dig up.

@Daniel Boles. Thanks Daniel, that makes sense then, that must be what it is, if that is the case then it does bode well that the floppy image can be transferred to HXC

The fz dumps can aswell fzdump sysex image files can be loaded by the hxc

Thankyou Emma, so does that mean the disk images of the optional software can be uploaded via sysex to FZDump?

Also I have had some small amount of success, I have located a disk image of the midi sequencer/playbacker tool at Forum • Casio FZ-1 Optional Software?

I have converted it to HXC hfe image and it works in the FZ1, I have uploaded both the original image and the conversion to the files section.
So that means if we can get the disk images for the fade/loop optimizer tools, they can be used too

All I can tell you is I do have the floppies - they are illegible to Pcs so I cannot get any further info.

Thanks Lee, I appreciate your taking the time to verify, I'll look into it further to see how an image could be made, are you in the UK?

I am.
I am looking for a way to avoid floppies on the FZ - as I doubt the drive will last forever. The memory disk option is a tad expensive. I'd rather have PC access but can't solve that either.

Ahhh Hell right under my very nose, Thank You so much George, you're a legend

@Lee Borrell There is talk of the GOTEK emulators working for things like the Atari St, Amiga and other samplers, and they are a cheaper alternative to the HXC, but the contra argument to those has always been that you're all on your own as there is no real support, and that as yet noone has come forward to state categorically that they work with the FZ series, although in theory, as long as you get the right floppy emulation (shugart) it should be doing the same thing.

Re: [Casio_FZ_Samplers] Re: Optional Software

2015-01-17 by emma

To get them to work people have had to rewrite the os for the arm processor for certain types of machine as the gotek is coded for dos type interface and floppy tracks

Now they can be set to shugart and always have been as they have jumpers but you also have to buy specific floppy disk sizes as the firmware is written with either 720k or 144

Now there are lots of devices that use the dos standard like yamaha akai

But a lot used there own floppy format and so they could squeeze 800k onto a 720k disk by using different tracks and bytes depth

The problem with the goteks is there is no way to tell the arm processor it needs to change how it reads and sends the data to the machine how the machine expects it

Unlike the hxc which has a hfe file in its root directory that has the information so that any image file can be read and can be sent correctly

Now these instruments are investments and £100 is not expensive if it makes your life easier but with the fz1 you dont need it as you can dump samples a full 2mb will take a few minutes time for a cup of tea

Like we used to do in the 80,s and 90,s which would give us a break and time to reflect on what we are doing

I have scsi to cf internal drives in all my scsi capable devices because of ease of use cost never came into it as time is money in making music

I really doubt any Gotek will work as they are mapped tor the particular track/sector/bitrate/etc parameters of standard (M)FM/DOS-like disks, whereas the FZ uses a weird 1.2 MB format that has different parameters.

I have Goteks in various other devices but will buy an HxC for my FZ-10M soon. I need an excuse to try the HxC anyway :-D

Re: Optional Software

2015-01-17 by Daniel Boles

Sorry, just saw Jammie has already said this - my email had not refreshed.

Also I think the FZ is 1.5 or 1.6 MB, not 1.2 - because there would have been no point using a weird format to get LESS space than a standard 1.44 MB disk.

I agree Emma, I bought the HXC for the FZ1 and it really is fantastic, and I have a SCSI Magneto Optical drive serving my AKAI S1000/3000xl and the convenience serves my creativity more so than hunting down elusive floppies....and thanks for clearing up the inadequacies of the GOTEK

Re: [Casio_FZ_Samplers] Re: Optional Software

2015-01-17 by emma

I did extensive testing on the goteks which daniel knows about as the 1.44mb version was 50% cheaper than the 720k versions so I tried to use jumpers and the like I then read both drives firmware and it was the firmware but they also had other problems to previous versions for the sy85 and disk changing

They also work with the akai s900/950

The k5000

But would never work with the fz the fz uses the original 5.25shurgart standard and so spins at the 360 rpm which is very unusual and at that time it was the first 16bit sampler and the first to use 1.44mb drives every one was still using 720k drives

And why its very hard to image disks on a pc as it comes back error wrong speed when using a standard 1.44disk drive with the hxc software but if you use the fz1 drive its ok
