Frozen CZ-1 (Display simply reads "Casio CZ-1") Help

2017-01-16 by seanober@...

Won't seem to boot up.

Replaced PSU Caps, Battery but still a no-go. Any ideas appreciated. btw, I can select "initialize" at boot but freezes during that as well.

Thank you, Sean Dab

Are you sure the battery is OK, and connected properly as for polarity?

Are you sure no cable or connector inside was not disconnected, not
perfectly connected or misconnected?

Are you sure you perform System Initialize according to Service Manual?

Yup, tried all the above and it's still frozen. Everything was working fine and it just froze one day. Since, replace battery, PSU caps, voltages okay, etc. I wonder if there was a spike and those old caps didn't react properly, due to age. I wonder what might go out next after PSU?

If voltages are fine and you recapped everything, it could be a digital failure (maybe some proprietary IC isn't working anymore). I read the service manual but didn't found any tip.

CPU seems to be working (otherwise you wouldn't get the init message on screen).

Are ROM ICs plugged into a socket, or are they soldered? Are the IC pure ROM or are they EPROM? In some cases, EPROM-based firmwares stop working due to aging.

Try turning it on and leaving it for a while, then turn it off overnight, then back on. I've noticed synths from this vintage sometimes come back to life incrementally. I know, it sounds wrong, but I've had several of them do this.Rig
