Casio CZ5000 Capacitors leaking?

Casio CZ5000 Capacitors leaking?

2012-01-07 by Jim Atwood

Hi everyone,

I opened up my Casio CZ5000 to replace the Omron relay after receiving a
replacement here in Japan. I noticed three Capacitors that had this green
substance attached to the bottom and thought perhaps it might be some leakage.
It also could be glue or some other substance. Here are three links to the
photos of the jack board. I'd greatly appreciate someone with some experience
taking a look and letting me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

Jim

Hi. Does not look like leakage to me, probably a glue used during assembly to keep the heavy component in place when they flip the board over to solder......

I'll second that. It seems strange that it is only on the 3 larger
capacitors. Usually if a cap goes, it's the top (see the triple split
at the top?) that starts to bulge. I can say that it does look like
someone spilled some coffee into it...around the hole in the PCB.

Thanks very much for the replies everyone.

I went ahead and replaced the malfunctioning Relay and the Casio CZ-5000 is in perfect working order again. The old relay popped out quite easily compared to other desoldering jobs I've done which surprised me a bit. The replacement relay I bought from Omron here in Japan fit perfectly! Everything works awesome now!

I'm glad I don't have to worry about the capacitors. Whew!

Thanks everyone.

Hi, Jim,

congratulations to your successful repair!

Could you please write me exact type of relay and where have you
ordered it here in Japan? Maybe I will need one for my CZ3000 - I
couldn't find service manual on the net, but I'd suppose basic
circuit is the same.

Electrolytics very, *very* rarely fail unless they are used in hot, poorly-ventilated power supplies.

In 20-odd years of repairing electronic equipment I've changed maybe a dozen or so genuinely faulty electrolytics, barring stock faults in crappy old Amstrad satellite receiver power supplies.
