Ricardo

If you want more power (complex programming) go VZ-1 if you want easier
programming go CZ-1.

Graham

you chew a sour cherry now and try to decide if you want a sweet cherry or a
mango.
Both are very tasty - the CZ-1 is BETTER than the CZ-1000, the VZ-1 is
BETTER
and DIFFERENT. Looking at the prices now, maybe you can strike a bargain and
afford
BOTH?!?

Well... You can buy then two for the price of PSR-640... Maybe less... But I
don't have money for it...

It depends on what you want. If you want something like the CZ only better,
get the CZ-1. I'd go for the VZ though, because there are many more options
and it's about the same price. It doesn't sound like a CZ at all (so you
might want to keep the CZ-1000 around) but it's one of the most deeply
programmable synths out there (at least in this price range).

I guess it all comes down to this- if you really really like programming
super complex sounds, get the VZ. And you probably know about what to
expect with the CZ-1 seeing as how you've got a 1000.

There isn't objectively a "better" choice. It all depends on what you want.

Hello,
I can't personally vouch for the CZ-1, though I am guessing it sounds
similar to the CZ-1000 with more poly. I have a CZ-1000 and two
VZ-10m's. They sound totally(!) different to my ears. The CZ is warmer
and can sound more analogish, though obviously it can do weirdness
really well, too... The VZ's have almost a crystalline fragile sound in
comparison. They do subtle really well. Definitely digital, but
extremely powerful digital. The other thing to keep in mind is the VZ
series is not the same synthesis - it is IPD (interactive phase
distortion) rather than the CZ's PD. Gives you a lot more options along
with a lot more to keep track of in a patch... Patches on a VZ can be
amazingly complex and subtle and totally unique - nothing else ever made
quite like it. I feel like a computer editor is a must with the VZ's.
I use SoundDiver. If you're used to the CZ1000 you'll still have to do
some homework to get to grips with the IPD. It's far more complex and
capable and unpredictable in a sort of FM way. I'd recommend- if at all
possible that you listen to the VZ's before you purchase, but for sure
listen with some FX to get a real idea of what it can do. The dry output
can be pretty dull, but with FX - wow... It's not likely to sound like a
Virus, though. So it depends on what kind of sounds you like.
I like them both a lot for many reasons, but you are the one who has to
choose with your ears. You really can't compare these synths one to one
- they are totally different in many ways. If you want a quick review
of both of them check out the Casio section at:
