Re: [CZsynth] Who Still Uses A CZ?

2009-05-11 by Simon Beck

I don't any more.

Mine is a long and sad tale with ups and downs... Back in 1985 I was a keen Casio player, having bought a CT-202 new from Casio UK four years earlier. My only other keyboard (apart from an occasional "borrowed" grand piano) was a Hohner Pianet T electric piano. When the CZ-101 appeared, I played it in music shops at every possible opportunity, learning its functions and capabilities. Finally I bought one, and it became the cornerstone of my sound for the next 10 years.

When I stopped using the CT-202 on a regular basis I reproduced my favourite sounds as CZ-101 patches (I was very good at imitative synthesis) before giving the older keyboard to a local museum. My Hohner Pianet got stolen in 1988, but fortunately I also had a CZ patch for that sound, and I replaced the Hohner with a MIDI-equipped Casio CPS-101 electronic piano. This also meant that I could now finally play the CZ-101 from a full-sized keyboard!

Sounds ideal, doesn't it? But one grey afternoon in 1997 I got out my CZ-101 after several months of non-use. No sound at all!!! All the LEDs flashed simultaneously but the LCD remained blank. I tried everything, even the reset button but to no avail. I hate to say it, but I eventually put it in its flightcase and sadly drove it down to the local dump...

Then in about 2002 a CZ-1 came up on Ebay and I bought it for £80. I programmed in all my favourite sounds - I had kept all my old patch sheets - and of course it had twice the polyphony, velocity and after-touch, plus a very odd chorus effect...

Guess what? Yes, in 2006 it got stolen from my car. I still have a Casio, a WK-3000. It's a lot less programmable than the CZs, but just as playable and musical in its own way. And I've even programmed a Hohner Pianet sound...
