There is no adjustment for the backlight. It powers up when you turn on the synth. There is an adjustment for the contrast on the LCD display. This just makes the characters darker or lighter and can improve the viewing angle. This is VR2 on the main MA1M board. This trimpot is near where the ribbon cable plugs in to the board. The Service Manual says to turn it all the way counter clockwise to start with.
