Below you can read the textfile belonging to the upgrade.
I upgraded my VF-1 a couple weeks ago, this textfile came along with the
download of 15 midifiles, yes 15.
I quess there is no Standard Midi File nr. 15, the text mentions in the 3rd
sentence (see below):"The updated software is provided as 15 Standard Midi
Files".

Along with this text file I dowloaded 15 midifiles, nr. 1-14 and 16.
I've used them and I've upgraded succesfully my VF-1 version 1.00 to 1.12.

Updating the VF-1 Operating System from Standard MIDI Files

Use the following procedure to update the VF-1 to the current
operating system. The updated software is provided as 15
Standard MIDI Files.

The tools required are:
* MIDI sequencer (software or hardware) that can load
  Standard MIDI Files
* MIDI cable
* VF-1
* VF-1 System Software update files

CAUTION!
Do not turn off the VF-1 during system software updating.
This can damage the machine.

Update Procedure

1. Connect the MIDI OUT of the sequencer to the MIDI IN
   of the VF-1.
2. Hold down WRITE button and PARAMETER LEFT[<] button
   while powering on the VF-1. The message
   "Flash Update" will be displayed.
3. Load the Standard MIDI Files into your sequencer.
4. Play all Standard MIDI Files: "vf1-01.MID" through
   "vf1-16.MID" in sequential order.
5. After all SMF's have been played into the VF-1, the
   message "NOW initializing! TURN OFF, After 40 seconds."
   will be displayed.
6. Wait 40 seconds,and Restart the VF-1
   (power off and then on again).

Checking the version number

While holding down the [ENTER] button, turn on the power
of the VF-1. The message "VF-1 Ver 1.10" will be displayed.
The version number will appear in the LCD for approximately
five seconds.

I've upgraded my vf1 successfully!

Excuse my distraction in reading the readme.txt.....

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
