You need a special cable, a midi interface from your computer to the midi
in/out of the Boss.
They come in all kinds and measures.

The newer ones are usb cables, the older ones (and cheapest) can be
connected to the game port of a sound card.
http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/thoiw7_edirol_um1sx_usbmidiinterface_prodinf
o.html

Also there are soundcards nowadays with your standard 5 pin midi connectors
so there is no need for buying a midi interface, normal midi cables will do
fine in that case.

Syx files can be send using Midi Ox, a free sysex program.
At the moment the site seems to be down, but google will help you find it.

But you also can use software like cubase or cakewalk.

If you are a total newbie to midi Harmony Central has some reading stuff and
more:

The moderator could perhaps (thats an unusual thing to do) but I assume:
1.Nobody is looking for you.
2. you must have subbed yourself to this group, you also have to unsub
yourself, the other day I mailed you the link and the emailadress for this.
3. This is a nice and not busy group, so look at it from a bright site, you
could have been subbed to a group with 200+ mails a day, now at that point I
can understand someone "it's driving me nuts".
4. so unsub yourself by sending a mail to: * To unsubscribe from this
group, send an email to:
 BossVF1-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com *
5 and/or look at this page for some more info: To visit this/your group on
the web, go to:

Feel free to ask if you don't understand.

VF-1 system settings

2004-10-07 by a'an CEBE

Hi there,

I've bought my fcb-1010 this week, and I configured
out how to program it a little. But the problem is
VF-1. I have no VF-1 manual or etc. So I couldn't
configure it. I've bought it second hand and maybe
some settings had changed before.

I would like to know the true settings to use FCB-1010
with VF-1 for effect on/off in a patch, and volume
pedal and etc. Also, there are some issues I couldnt
configure out in system settings, global and midi
settings. These are:
- Assign Hold :what does it for?
- Effects off MD ?
- Key=C user# ?
- input, output ?
- in the master settings there is a source type, and
values like midi1,midi2,...,midi95 what are these
values? Are they mid channel or controller number or
what?
- What is source mode (normal or toggle) ?

These are the things I couldnt configured out?
Are these necessary for using FCB1010?

I've checked the FCB1010 group and web site too, but
it's all about FCB1010 not VF-1.

I promise I'll prepare a guide about "How to use VF-1
with FCB1010" and put it to these web sites after I
configured it out...

Suppose you got your volume pedal on the fcb half up (lets say on value 63
or something, I use a fc 200 footcontroller)
If you change a patch with the assing hold on the next patch will also have
the volume on 63.
If you have the assign off the patch will get its programmed value.

Direct: the signal will be send unchanged to the outputs if the fx are not
on.
Mute: if thewre are no fx's on you won't hear anything, have an output
signal.

> - Key=C user# ?

I think they are for the pitch shifter, never used them.
I can do a lot of bla about them but it has to do with the key a song is
written in I think......

can't help you here, wath do you mean ?

They are not the midi channels but Control Commands, CC numbers.
Your FCB probably c\also sends them like my fc 200 does.
You can assign effects to your midi foot controller in the vf's master
section, they have to match to react.

The cc numbers are necesary for the fcb.
The assign hold function is not really necessary to know but itsd helpfull
to know, lol.

ok, not a member myself but I guess you mean the yahoo fcb group.

thats fine

success.

Last word, I have my vf as an fx machine hooked up in my mixer, dont' use
it together wit a midi footcontroller so I gave you some quick and hopefull
more as halfway reliable answers.

CC# values and VF-1

2004-10-11 by a'an CEBE

Hi,

I'm really getting mad with fcb1010 and vf-1.

I couldnt programmed it yet. I think I need what CC#
VF-1 uses for assignments like effect on/off and etc.

And I'm confused about the terminology used. On
FCB1010 there are 2 Control switches, and they send
control commands isnt it? when programming a patch on
FCb1010, there two things to do, give a number, and
give value(s)(sometimes min-max). What is the "number"
here? is it CC number? or what? And what is the
"value" here? is it the CC value? or what?

Is there anybody using FBC1010 and VF-1 together?
Please tell me how can I configure these two by giving
one simple example? For example wah on/off and wah
pedal (expression).

I tried to program it, but it still changes only
patches not effect on/off and etc. In a preset when I
push switch 1, it goes to patch 1. this is ok, when I
program this preset, for ex: switch 6 will push on
wah, it wont work when I push on switch 6 on preset 1,
just goes to preset 6 so patch 6 on Vf-1...

Help needed...

Re: [BossVF1] CC# values and VF-1

2004-10-11 by Sjaak de Vos

I don't know if anyone here uses the VF-1 together with a FCB 1010.
Maybe someone will post something but this is a rather small group.

I do happen to know that there is a yahoo group special for the FCB (i am a
member of the V-amp group on yahoo to).
The fcb 1010 is a not so simple to program thing is one of the things I
understood from the V-amp group (there are quite a number of people who use
a v-amp and fcb 1010 together and they initially droped their fcb questions
at the V-amp group, nowadays they are asked to join the Yahoo FCB group,
there is also a faq availlable)

anyway, look further down this mail for some vf-1 clues i can give.

> I couldnt programmed it yet. I think I need what CC#
> VF-1 uses for assignments like effect on/off and etc.

You have to choose the CC# to wich the boss vf-1 reacts yourself.
You can do this after the "master menu settings" in the "assign 1" (to 4)
menu's.
You have to choose a target, lets say in guitar multi 1 Comp on/of.
Under "source type" you can select "exp pedal-control 1 control 2 and CC#
1 - 31 and 64 to 95.
(don't forget to store the settings for every patch)

Choose a CC# and this must match with the cc your fcb sends.

The vf-1 has a total of 4 assignable controls you can adjust, so we just
used 1 for the compressor and you've got 3 left.
Hope this helps bit

RE: [BossVF1] CC# values and VF-1

2004-10-12 by Nicolas Thomas

Hi,
i use the FCB with the VF-1 and it works very well. I use the midi
connection only, not the jack switches.
Ther are some things to understand in the two devices:

The VF1 first:
As said before, the VF1 CC are assignable. That is to say for VF1 patch #12
for example, you can say that the wahwah effect is controlled by CC#45, and
in the patch #13 you say that the wahwah is controlled by CC#56. This
configuration is VF1 specific only, nothing to do with FCB. You can do this
configuration by entering the patch editor and going at the right of the
effects chain, and going right again, after the master menu etc...
The values interpretation can be configured too. One thing you could do is
to set the values as on/off (source mode is toggle):values from 0 to 63 are
for 'off', and values from 64 to 127 are for 'on' (use min value to 0 and
max value to 127 for this)
This is described in the Effect programming part of the VF1 manual

The FCB now:
A FCB patch can contain several PC command (but you will use only one for a
simple FCB to VF1 configuration) and 2 CC midi command. A FCB patch is
runned by pressing a FCB pedal. A FCB patch CAN contain PC and CC, that is
to say this is not a must. You can do some FCB patch with only CC or only PC
if you want.
And last but not least, if you configure one FCB patch in order to send two
CC with the same CC number but with two different values, it will switch
between the values when pressing again the pedal. Example: you configure FCB
patch 1 (pedal 1) for sending two CC. The first is CC#78, and value sent is
0. The second is CC#78 again, but value is now 64. The first time you will
push the pedal, the FCB will send CC#78-0, and the second time it will send
CC#78-64.

Now the VF1 and FCB together:
On the VF1: configure effect (wahwah) on CC#89 for example, and configure
the midi values interpretation(source mode) on on/off (toggle).
On the FCB: configure one pedal for sending two CC, with two different
values: CC#89 with value 0 for the first, and CC#89 with value 64 for the
second.
Now, by pressing pedal 1 you can switch wahwah on/off....

Last, the FCB CC value switch i've described is available from a particular
version of the FCB firmware. Go to the Behringer website: there is
description of each firmware on the FCB page, you will be able to see what
firmware is needed. You can check your FCB firmware while pulling the screws
and opening the FCB and reading the version number on the chip itself.

Hope it helps.
Nicolas

NB: all the values i ve given are only exemple and choosen arbitrary for the
example. Of course, you can choose other values.

RE: [BossVF1] CC# values and VF-1

2004-10-12 by Çaðan CEBE

Thank yoo Nicholas.

I think I'm stupid that I do not understand you (mean
not only you you all helping me).

There are two things I do not understand.
1- When programming a preset on FCB, there are 5 PC
commands, and 2 CC commands. to configure CC command,
I press 6th switch in programming mode, and edit it,
asks a number (when number light blinked). What is
this number? CC# ? if yes what is CC value?
After saving these settings, configuring Vf-1, select
a patch, forexmp patch1, I want to on/off delay
effect, with preset on fcb, I select assign1 delay
on/off, targetmin off targetmax on, then comes source
type, what should I choose? is it the number I chose
when configuring fcb preset, given the control number.
if yes, the vf-1 asks for expedal, control1, control2,
midi1,midi2,...,midi95. what are these, which is the
cc#05 for ex. is that control1 or control2, or midi5?
I do not understand the terminology differs in both
equipment. What are these midi1....midi95? Are they PC
commands or CC commands, if yes, what are Control1 and
Control2 on source type section of vf-1? Do I have to
select cc numbers like 45, 78 and etc, why not 01 02
04?

I will not write the other issues, this is the most
important one and making me mad...

Cagan

RE: [BossVF1] CC# values and VF-1

2004-10-12 by Nicolas Thomas

I will try to answer to each question, but because i dont know what is your
MIDI skill, let me explained some things about midi:
Midi protocol is done with 2 messages (there are many others, but lets go
with the two main..): PC and CC.
PC stands for Program Change, and has to be used only for changing patch on
a unit. PC message contains one parameter: the number of the new patch to
load.
CC stands for Control Change, and has to be used for changing on parameter
in a patch. CC message contains two parameter the number of the effect and
the new value. The number could be constant and given in your unit manual,
or dynamic like with the VF1: the number can be set by the user. For example
you set: DELAY FX LENGTH= #45. That is to say, when speaking with midi CC
message, the #65 fx stands for DELAY LENGTH.
The CC value is the new value to set for the specified parameter. Say for
example you want to set the delay length to 80.
So the message you will send is CC #45 (for DELAY LENGTH) - 80 (this is the
new length).

Another thing: VF1 has several controlling ways: analog expression pedal, 2
jack switch named control1 and control2 (like the ones which control channel
switch on many guitar amplifiers), and midi (5 pins).

>When programming a preset on FCB, there are 5 PC
>commands, and 2 CC commands. to configure CC command,
>I press 6th switch in programming mode, and edit it,
>asks a number (when number light blinked). What is
>this number? CC# ? if yes what is CC value?

As explained above, the CC message need two number: the fx number, say #45,
and the value of the parameter. Because you want on/off, the first one is 0
(off). You will need to program a second CC message, with the same fx number
(#45) and the value 'on', that is 64.

For programming your first message:
1 Go in edit mode (push 3s the button 1)
2 Have the CC1 and CC2 lights on, nothing else (that is: button 6 and 7)
3 Edit the CC1: push shortly button 6
4 The button light blinks => you edit the CC1
5 push UP => the number light is blinking: it ask for the number. Enter 45
(because we have decided delay is 45)
6 push UP => the value1 light is blinking: it ask for the value. Enter 0
(=off)
7 push UP to valid
8 Re do 3 to 7 step but for the CC2 (button 7) with number = 45 and value =
64 (=on)
9 push DOWN 3s in order to quit

===> each time you push button, it turns the effect #45 on/off

>After saving these settings, configuring Vf-1, select

>cc#05 for ex. is that control1 or control2, or midi5?

You have to use the number you have choosen in FCB in order to have the
things working, that is #45.
You choose DELAY ON/OFF and:
SOURCE TYPE = midi45 (= midi CC #45)
SOURCE MODE = NORMAL
SOURCE MIN = 0
SOURCE MAX = 127

You can now push the button 1 on the FCB and see the delay on/off

>I do not understand the terminology differs in both
>equipment. What are these midi1....midi95? Are they PC
>commands or CC commands,

CC command. PC has nothing to do in controlling parameters of a VF1 patch.
PC has only to do with changing VF1 patch. PC use can be configured in the
global menu of the VF1. As a summary, you can say: CC are patch specific and
have sense only within a patch, PC are unit specific and have no sense in a
patch, only with the whole unit.

>if yes, what are Control1 and
>Control2 on source type section of vf-1?
Control1 and 2 are the jack input at the rear of your VF1. Nothing to do
with midi

>Do I have to
>select cc numbers like 45, 78 and etc, why not 01 02
>04?
the number i have choose for CC# are totaly random! They are here only for
example and you can choose whatever you want. I have choosen randomly in
order to show you have the choice of the CC# (this is specific to VF1, lot
of device DONT give you this choice). The only important thing with CC# is
to configure the same in the FCB and in the VF1.
But values (0, 64) ive given are important.

Let me know how it goes

Thanks for your help Nicolas,

I think I've figured it out.

Now, I can on/off one effect for a preset on FCB.
Isnt it a bit limited use for a controller like this.
I can only change one effect on/off for a preset.

Would you recommend a method to control more effects
on Vf-1. For ex: I would like to on/off preamp effect,
wah effect, compressor and delay on vf-1, and use both
volume and wah pedals...

How do you guys control all these?

Thanks for all

I own a Roland fc-200 midi foot controller.
It has 4 different modes, I connect an xtra switch to the fc-200 to switch
between patch and cc# mode.
In cc# mode I have 11 cc#'s availlable to send from the fc-200 buttons.

Re: Editing program

Hi!

Sounddiver is an editor and librarian for hardware Synth&Effects (such
as the VF-1).

There is also "MIDI Quest" by Sound Quest (www.squest.com) and
"Unisys" by Mark Of The Unicorn (www.motu.com) but I don't know
whether these editors have an adaptation for VF-1.
