Somebody say something!

It's keeeeeeeellling me. (just kidding, synths can't kill) Not
many have commented about the Ion. How does it compare or how does it
sound? Do stores have the Ion to demo?

Where I shop in D.C. USA there's a demo model, but none in stock.
Have played it along with an A6 and Access Virus C for about 8 hrs
over the last two weeks. I thought the sound of the Ion was more
vibrant than that of the A6 but with less gravitas than the Virus C.
This, of course is highly subjective and probably due to setup
differences (I can't be sure what the salespeople do to the machines,
but I always restart them before comparison play to wipe out any
recent mods or non-saved settings). It may also be due to the number
of oscillators per voice and effects. I find the interface better
organized on the Ion than either the A6 or Virus C. In fact, I wish
the two could be redesigned, in this respect, along the lines of the
Ion. Two Sats ago I was a bit worried about the capability of the
Ion to produce FM like sounds, but found out how to do this last
Sat. Also found more deep phatt bass sounds. On the other hand, I
still think the Virus C and A6 have a larger palette of sounds. This
may be due to my limited exposure to the Ion. Eventually I'll have
both the Ion and the Virus C. The A6 is too expensive in terms of
money and space in comparison to the Ion and VC for what you get
sonically IMHO. Bought an Ion last Sat.

I've got the Ion, the Andromeda and a Virus Indigo II in my studio, and my
opionions/comarisons:

Andromeda: don't use the presets. roll your own. It has its own very
distinct sound. Excellent for sound FX and wild leads

Virus: good for almost everything. very good for bass and big sounds that
eat everything. its filter sounds best of the bunch in my opinion (better
even than the true analog one on the andromeda). its FX are superior to
either

Ion: Again, never use the presets - 90% of them don't begin to show what
the machine can do. Very agreeable sound - by that I mean it mixes well
with other synths. Its almost got a humble tone - warm and melancholy. My
BIG gripe is no delay effect. I got an Alesis Wedge of ebay for it. that
should round out the FX.
