What are the most common display options do we have apart from

  ANy terminal emulator (unless it is highly specific to a particular
proprietary terminal protocol) should be usable.

I had a couple I was using that weren't free.  One was called something 
like COMM751.  I lost them in a hard drive crash earlier this year.  I've 
been using a program called NETTERM but it leaves something to be desired.

The most common display option I use is an LED. Inexpensive. One bit
interface. Choice of colors. Can be flashed with different patterns to
indicated different messages or simply on/off for one message. Cheap
enough that if one LED isn't sufficient then add 3 or 4 more.

I suspect that since he referred to Hyperterminal he was referring to some 
sort of interface for talking to the USART.  The question wasn't very 
clear.

There are lots of serial interface programs available out there, some free 
and some not. You pays yer money (or not) and you takes yer chances.

Yes, that is why I replied. He asked poorly for "most common display
options" and no one had the imagination to suggest anything other than
Windows terminal emulators. So I suggested the lowly LED, as it is *the*
most common display option. LCD modules are also very practical,
starting at $5.

He did ask for "display" which does not include "input" in my
vocabulary.

Another nice one I use is VBHexTerm from

It has a lot of good features, but has a tendancy to get clogged with 
really high data rates.  Still way better than Hyperterm.
