Sources for a large character LCD display?

Sources for a large character LCD display?

2005-04-10 by arhodes19044

I am looking for a source for a large character LCD display. At least
16 x 2 characters. 20 x 4 might be OK too (vertical space might be an
issue).

I'd like the characters to be 9mm high or slightly more. Needs a back
light. I know they are around, but I can not find a definite source.

Farnell have some of the blue LCDs from Everbouquet, including this
one: http://www.everbouquet.com.tw/MC1602J.htm (farnell 5005231)
with a 9.66mm character. We've got some 16X1 units at work and
they're really sexy displays :-)

I will check out the sources you mentioned. Size is a little factor
bacause the display will be at arm's length away.

Good contrast and visibility in bright surroundings is really
important.

I will check out the PLED's

I have some nice 8x24 spare panels that have an async serial
interface. They are currently set up for 19.2K baud but I can change
the firmware to make it slower or hardware selectable (e.g.
2400/19.2K). Here is a link to a page with some pictures and

I got one of the 16x2 blue displays from Farnell. They do look good.

If the point of having a large display is visibility then you might also look at
PLED displays. They aren't as big as you stated but I find the visibility better
than larger LCDs. http://www.onestopdisplays.net/main.php

Also you might want to have a look at the VFDs:
http://www.noritake-elec.com/transless.htm
I've not used them, but they look nice, and Farnell stock them:
882940 and 882951. They may be smaller characters, but the clarity
might be better.

A note for the Everbouquet displays - a contrast pot is really
important. Some displays I've used are fine with Vo at 0V, but not
these ones.

Wow, those CFD's look bright. I guess "F" is "Fluorescent"?

If so, then they probably work well with polarized sunglasses too...

If I put a desklamp shining directly onto a PLED display from 1 meter I can
stand 2 meters away and read it easily. The contrast is 100%.
