Yes, use tools which don't go nuts!
In a professional environment you can't aford to have problems like
this. Blaming your tools doesn't cut it with management ;->

I'm afraid the chips are next to useless if the tools aren't doing what
you expect of them. Seriously you need to think about moving platforms
if it's causing you so much grief.

Do you have other platforms to fall back on? A good designer will never
stick to one platform anyway, they'll use the right one for each job.

I would not let the love of a particular chip outweigh the practical
considerations of getting the job done. Don't continue to use tools
which cause you grief, it's not worth it. I've been there, I switched
when my back was to the wall and the white truck was ready to pick me up
and cart me away in a straight jacket. I now sleep better at night.

I know, I am management. Yesterday's little "issue" cost me about $500.

Hmm.. Then I have to weigh loosing my experience base against a "maybe" 
benefit.
When I was doing Zilog, their tools were junk too, but Signum made some 
great ones, albeit rather expensive at about $8000 in '92bucks for an ice.

Lately, all my jobs have been well suited to one or another AVR.
There might be something nicer out there, but again, there's significant 
uncertanity.

Is that who that is out at the corner?  They've been watching me, and 
tapping my phone calls, and I think shooting rays into my head with 
lasers..  (only kidding.. Really!)
