STK500 serial programmer under Linux

Hi there; I've been trying to get my STK500 programmer to work under linux and I've been running into some troubles that I hope one of you might be able to help me with. The programmer has the latest firmware from Atmel. I have verified that the programmer/serial cable works by programming the chip on a while running windows on the same box using the very latest Avrstudio. I can set fuses and anything I need using both ISP and high voltage parallel modes. I have also verified the serial port is working in linux by firing up minicom and plugging into the console on a sun solaris box I have nearby. No issues. I've used this machine as a serial console several times and to download to my palm pilot. However, both usip and avrdude (latest versions) both are unable to connect to the programmer. Both report the programmer is not responding. The cable settings and everything on the stk500 are the same as in windows. I am confident my setups for uisp and avrdude are ok since I use both to program many different devices from tiny26 to mega32 using the parallel port. I've tried setting the port latency, baud_base and several other serial port parameters but to no avail. I am thinking there is something wrong or missing in my config but I am not too sure what. The serial device that I knows that works with minicom is /dev/ttyS0. This machine (Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop) has only one serial port. I am running redhat 8 with kernal version 2.4.18-14. I also tried it on an AMD box running Fedora core 3 with the same results (both serial ports). Any suggestions on where I can look to fix it? Thanks, eh. Craig
