FPGA's

2004-09-06 by Kathy Andrea Quinlan

Hi all,

I want to play with FPGA's, so I am looking for a dev kit. I do not
want to spend $1,000's but want something that will let me learn.

any recomendations ?

Things I would like:

Ability to do designs with PCI.
Ability to impliment IP cores.

Any sugestions ?

Pref australian distributor.

Regards,

Kat.

I've tacked on the name of another Yahoo group. I'm sure
the friendly folks there (some Australian) will help you
out.

OK after looking at the sugestions and doing some googling for over 4
hours (gee I wish I had more money ;) I have found the memec stuff (I
have an agent for them in WA ;)
http://www.insightelectronics.com.au/cgi-bin/bvutf8/memec/scripts/local/manuDetailArticle.jsp?catPath=/INSIGHT/AUS_NZ/AUSTRALIA/MANUFACTURERS/MD_XILINX/EVALUATION_KITS/Spartan%20Series%20Kits&Manu=10089&isDetailPage=true&EDOID=208412&Div=INSIGHT&Reg=AUS_NZ&Country=AUSTRALIA&Lang=EN&PnACountry=AUSTRALIA

looks reasonable, I can do most of the stuff I want (PCI will wait)

unh, i think FPGA is never cheaper then 1000, are you a uni student?
perhaps you can borrow one of the development kit from your uni to play
with it?

Try here http://www.fpga4fun.com/ .
Site not working (at least from here), I remember they have a board with
PCI too.

If you're looking for IP cores, you also may want to look here:

http://www.opencores.org/

Having some code to look at while you're getting started isn't a bad
thing either...

Digilent is the maker of the Spartan-3 development board that I use.

Re: [AVR-Chat] FPGA's

Hi;

I am no hardware designer, but I tried long before
using Xilinx XC95144XL CPLD's. the only thing you need
to start using it, is a xilinx cable programmer, which
is something like AVR ISP cable, the ISE WebPack
synthesys tool (which can be freely downloaded from
Xilinx web site), one XC95144-TX100 CPLD which I got
about $20.

for free cores such as a PCI core, see:

www.opencores.org

which contains many tested cores in many categories.
all of them are free to download and test.

good luck.

Recently I bought my self a xilinx spartan3 based
dev-board from Nuhorizons, it costed me 164$ and board
has many peripherals on board, though PCI development
with it is not possible.

xilinx spartan3 starter kit
US$99 about Aus$150
http://www.xilinx.com/products/spartan3/s3boards.htm
http://www.xilinx.com/xlnx/xebiz/productview.jsp?sGlobalNavPick=PURCHASE&sSecondaryNavPick=&category=-21488&iLanguageID=1&category=/Xilinx+Products/Hardware+and+Cables/Development+Boards/Spartan-3+Boards

can't do pci

made by digilentinc.com for xilinx
have add on boards for it. see https://digilent.us/Sales/System.cfm
Very good, cheap board. Easy to use.

Or get from Digilentinc

Or digilentinc D2FT + DIO5
https://digilent.us/Sales/Product.cfm?Prod=D2FT-DIO5

>>> > Pref australian distributor.

Can get the spartan 3 starter kit from memec.com.au
I got mine direct from xilinx, ordered it on a tuesday night, had it delivered
on the thursday afternoon in Sydney.

For a pci board your looking at a good bit more.

Options include the memec / insight boards. Think these are around US$500+

Dragon board from www.fpga4fun.com
http://www.fpga4fun.com/board_dragon.html
bit small though.

Also have a search or post in news:comp.arch.fpga
