You need an "AVR-ISP mk2" device* to program the AVR. This is USB in,
and connects to the AVR using Atmel's standard 6 pin header. Available
from some electronics suppliers eg Digikey in the US, and from
programming equipment suppliers.

AVR Studio, as John says, is Atmel's free software which you can use to
write your code and will then download the code to your AVR device using
the AVR-ISP.
