The newest version of AVRDUDE, version 5.0, supports the newer JTAGICE
MkII protocol, but we don't yet have support for the original JTAGICE
protocol.  The ECROS ICE Cube uses the original protocol, so it is not
yet supported by AVRDUDE.  We hope to have this support in a future
release.

If your laptop has a serial port, or you have a USB to RS232 adpater,
and you have access to another programmer type, like an Atmel AVRISP
($29 from Digikey) or even an STK500, you can use AVRDUDE to read out
the EEPROM.

It's generally good to have at least one other programmer type in your
toolbox for these "just in case" moments, at least as a backup.  I
personally have had to fall back to "plan B" on a few occasions -
means the difference between continuing to make progress and being
stuck.
