You have to get the data sheet for the particular part you are going to 
use.  

I've used several Optrex LCD displays with the HD44780 LCD driver chip.  I 
have data sheets both for the HD44780 and the Optrex data sheet for their 
displays telling how to set up and use them. 

But you have to start with the data sheet for the particular component you 
plan to use.

Typing in part numbers in Google search will often yield data sheets you 
can download.
