Hi Tony,

Besides all the other good advice you've already gotten (the one jerk 
notwithstanding) you might want to study the manual for the HD44780.  I 
believe that's the chip used in the Optrex LCD's.

The data sheet for the 44780 is a bit hard to come by but I have it on my 
website at http://www.qsl.net/w9sz/files/PDFs.
