I downloaded AVR-GCC and it looks quite complete.  I will try to 
work a little with it.

It seems cumbersome to have to "make" everything manually each time, 
but I am sure it will become easy.

I'd rather just have a menu selection called "compile and run"

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
