Hi

Is that a Kanda AVRISP or an Atmel AVRISP?

The reason maybe because these devices require to be programmed in
High-voltage Serial mode. The 10/11 and 12 support this method. In the
datasheet for this device see High-Voltage serial Programming Algorithm.

If this is the Atmel AVRISP then It may be worthwhile looking in the
helpfiles of AVRstudio to see if these devices have to be connected in a
certain way to work on an STK500.
