You can make the process a little easier by going to: http://fink.sourceforge.net This is a port/package installation system and there are ports for the avr tools there. They are not necessarily the latest and greatest versions, but they are stable. Also a Google search should lead you to an article that shows how to use the Mac OS X development environment, Xcode, with the avr tools.
