Dave,

 Sorry to hear you're having a bad time.
A suggestion..

Download the CV-AVR demo, compile your code on studio, and then use CV-AVR 
to program the chips.

I have no end of hassle with the bloody avr studio programmer, but CVAVR 
always seems to work perfectly.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
