Sorry about being so touchy. I have bad days
also.
I experienced the same problem and solved it
by-
uninstalling Studio 4.11
reinstalling Studio 4.11
Before opening Studio connect the STK500 or
AVRISP
When you open Studio and select the programmer
you
should get a flash screen saying you have an
old
firmware version and do you want to
update.
Answer yes and follow the on-screen
directions.
The AVRISP will update automatically,
for the STK500 it directs you through the
update.
No guarantees, of course, but it worked for
me.
Good luck, Ron

The supposedly "curt" reply:
"Well, no, since studio says it can't see them, I don't get the option to
do that."
Ok ron, how would you suppose that I should upgrade them, when studio says
they aren't there?
Studio isn't doing the usual thing, saying the firmware is old and
operation isn't guaranteed.
It's telling me there's no AVRISP/STK-500/JtagIce connected at all.
Studio 4 used to work with these same devices, all four of them.
I'm not sure what's going on here.
I'd really hate to accidentally turn my dev tools into useless "bricks" by
trying something "just in case".
